He has two companions, Jerry Kelsey, a muscular playboy, and Weed Jones, a scrawny cabbie from Brooklyn. The body of the murdered Professor Roberts has been discovered by Jerry’s half sister, Nan Allen, girl reporter.Saxon is attacked by having a scorpion dropped through a hole drilled in the wall of his hotel room. Jerry and Weed are attacked by two men on their way there. The men are associates of one Hassan Ibn Faaz, a thug for hire better known as Ali Bey. After escaping their foes, Jerry and Weed encounter Nan driving a stolen car.Nan has found a small scarab, or as Saxon corrects her, a scarabiod, in the pocket of murdered Professor Roberts. The ornament is a door seal from an Egyptian Tomb, with a warning inscribed on the belly. And it is carved from stone as red as fire.Herr Doktor Phol, who has had at least two prior run-ins with Saxon and Associates, is behind the attacks. Unsatisfied with the service provided by Ali Bey, Phol sends a man-beast to attack Jerry and Weed. Their bullets don’t seem to affect it very much.Saxon breaks down the door and attacks the beast-man from behind causing it to flee. There is a comparison to The Werewolf of London movie that “B” movie hound Jerry, has seen lately.A visit to University’s head curator brings a tale of a Star Shaped pyramid or fortress in the desert. Two men who had survived tried to kill each other and were incapable of normal speech. They vanished without a trace.A short man in a fez, obviously Ali Bey, showed up and asked for all available manuscripts and charts on a certain section of the desert some ninety miles outside of Cairo. He had an ancient map marked with the star.Discovering the location of the “Pyramid” Saxon & Associates discover it isn’t a tomb, but a scientific repository of ancient experiments, some very involved. They discover five of Professor Robert’s party dead within the ruins. Two are in a sealed stone box. They are attacked there by Ali Bey and his pack of assassins.What is “The Pharaoh’s Ribbon?” What is the truth behind the “were-jackals” as Weed calls them? What is causing the many deaths by exsanguination? And what is Herr Doktor Phol really after?The story is in the style of pulp fiction, but a little weak in some places. The usual formula applies: A larger-than-life hero with assistants that engage in friendly bickering; a lovely girl who is a hard-headed adventurer who gets involved in the case unbidden; and a larger-than-life villain who is a German expatriate.The flow gets confused at times, but remains interesting. The narrator has a good voice, and is easy to listen to. Overall, the audio book isn’t bad.I give it four out of five stars. As I said, the story is weak in spots. It also ends rather abruptly.
