Jack Quinn’s book is a daily account, in the form of a journal, of one man’s solo trek along the Camino de Santiago from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France to Sarría, Spain plus descriptions and photos of Santiago itself and of Madrid. The book has 260 color photographs in total, most of them taken on the Camino. Although Jack Quinn describes himself as a senior citizen, his experiences on the Camino are those of most pilgrims of any age, and his observations are those of a much younger person. This book is a “must read” for anyone of any age planning to walk the Camino for the first time. Before doing any planning, watch the movie The Way for a quick introduction to the Camino and then read Jack Quinn’s book to understand the Camino experience in depth. Due to his well written descriptions of each day’s trek profusely illustrated with photos, you will feel that you are walking the Camino with him. Once you start reading, you will not want to put this book down. In addition to a write-up of each day’s stage, Jack Quinn’s book includes descriptions of many of the pilgrims' hostels where he stayed (and advice on some to avoid) and tips on essentials, from what to pack to buying French and Spanish train tickets. Each stage is illustrated with photographs of what to see and spiced with anecdotes of the author’s interaction with locals and other pilgrims. Read the book before you plan, and carry it with you on the Kindle app of your tablet or cell phone to read about what to expect on the next day’s stage. You will not only enjoy the entertaining writing style, you will refer to it the book every day to mine its trove of information. If there is one book you should read before starting the Camino, this is it. If you have already done the Camino, this book will bring back memories. Mr. Quinn spent several days in the major cities along the Camino including Pamplona, Leon, Burgos, and Santiago itself, so those cities are covered in more depth. Additionally, it contains journal entries and photographs of the days the author spent in Madrid after the Camino and of several cities in Southern France where he stayed while preparing to hike as well as some remarks about his preparation in Phoenix before leaving for France plus the extended “United Airlines trip from hell” on the way from Phoenix to Toulouse.

From the Author Doing the Camino was difficult, but every day was enjoyable, even hiking in the rain. I tried to include everything, the good and the bad, and highlight some of the characters I met along the way. I hope that my enjoyment comes through some of my toungue-in-the-cheek grumbling. I also hope that reading this book will inspire you to do the Camino yourself. If I can do it, you can, too! If this book inspires just one person to walk the Camino, it will be worth the effort I put into it. Walking the Camino is a wonderful experience.Although you can read this book on any Kindle device, you will enjoy the photographs more if you read it using the Kindle app on a device with a color screen.

Blanchard Pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago are eclectic, differing in nationality, religion, and age. A Senior Citizen Walks the Camino de Santiago depicts Jack Quinn's walk as a septuagenarian. Though the author celebrates his 73rd birthday on the trail, the book appeals to anyone of any age.In the first part, Mr. Quinn talks about the Camino, his reason for doing it, and how he prepared for it. The remainder of the book is a copy of his daily blog entries. These are written with wit and knowledge of history and are entertaining and informative.Though the author states that age should not be a limiting factor to walking the Camino, this book is not a manual for senior citizens who wish to do so, unless it is by inspiration. It is the author's story and does not delve into age-specific topics. From "Look inside" the book, the pictures are excellent. Unfortunately, they were very dark on my black and white screen. To enjoy the beauty of the Camino, I suggest reading this on a color display.I recommend this book to those who are planning to hike the Camino and those who which to relive their pilgrimage.

Thank you, Jack Quinn, for sharing you work with me - this book has me adding the Camino to my bucket list! This is an extraordinary book. Mr. Quinn journals his way from St. Jean, France along the Camino de Santiago to Sarria, Spain, a trip of over 400 miles across a couple of mountain ranges. He did not walk the final stretch to Santiago de Compostela because it is so crowded in the final stretch and he felt no need for his walk to be certified. The walkers on the Camino come from all over the world, an eclectic group with a common goal - reaching the church in Santiago de Compostela to ask St. John to intercede with God to absolve us of our sins.Quinn tells us what to pack, what to leave behind, the best of the hostels in each small town along the Camino and the better and/or less expensive ways to book train, bus and flight tickets to get too and from the trail. His pictures taken on his cell phone are excellent - I viewed them on my desk Mac and they look great - lots of detail I was not able to pick up on the i-pad.M. Quinn titles himself a senior citizen, but despite his recognized seventy-two years, he's a pistol. I spent a lot of my time reading aloud to my husband and daughter so we could all share the laughter. This is a wonderful way to 'visit' Spain. I would recommend this book to any one with a little wanderlust.

It even lists all the things you should take with you. This isn’t the usual account of how the Camino changed the author’s perceptions of life/found peace/ reconciled the world. This is an entirely factual account of what happened during the author’s trek. He refers to the book as a blog, and I suppose it really is a blog rather than a story, but he has written in an endearing, matter-of fact manner, that his character comes through. It’s a particularly praiseworthy achievement for a man in his seventies to complete the journey, and he spares us the usual grisly litanies of the physical punishment and the privations that one suffers along the way – and for someone his age it must have been a punishing few weeks. Instead he merely alludes to his tiredness and muscle aches, and gets on with the account. There is little time spent musing about the spiritual side of the Camino, the history, or the stories of the other pilgrims he meets – the author is clearly no Tim Moore, Tony Hawks or Jan Morris – but we are given a delightfully insouciant tale of one man’s journey and his dogged determination to finish.A splendid effort.
