Here’s a hope-filled book about Alzheimer’s caregiving. It was written by Marie Marley, PhD - a well-known author on dementia issues - and neurologist Daniel C. Potts, MD, FAAN, both experts on caregiving. With a Foreword by Maria Shriver, this groundbreaking volume will give you hope in the midst of the darkness of Alzheimer’s and other dementias. You can come to terms with your loved one’s condition and free yourself to experience joyous interactions. Part I covers a variety of issues, such as the authors’ belief that people with Alzheimer’s can still enjoy life, how to overcome denial, five especially difficult situations, the role of grief on the journey to acceptance, and letting go of resentment through making peace with God. In Part II the authors provide 55 helpful tips for visiting people with Alzheimer’s. Part III consists of numerous short stories illustrating the authors’ joyous interactions with their loved ones. The stories will warm your heart and light your way along the path to achieving true joy.

Finding Joy In Alzheimer's: New Hope for Caregivers, by Marie Marley PhD, Daniel C. Potts MD

About the Author Marie Marley was an expert grant writer who, over the years, acquired a keen understanding of many geriatric topics, including dementia. However, none of that could have prepared her for the sometimes difficult demands of loving and caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease. The touching story of her lifelong relationship with Edward Theodoru is narrated in her uplifting, award-winning book, Come Back Early Today: A Memoir of Love, Alzheimer’s and Joy. The book focuses on the time when Ed had Alzheimer’s. Marie blogs regularly on the Huffington Post, the Alzheimer’s Reading Room, Maria Shriver’s Architects of Change website, and other Alzheimer’s websites. She has published more than 250 articles on Alzheimer’s caregiving on these sites and has made presentations on topics of interest to caregivers at support groups and professional meetings. Marie was a grant writer for more than 35 years, first at the University of Cincinnati Department of Family Medicine and then at the American Academy of Family Physicians. Now retired, she lives in Kansas City with her little Shih Tzu, Joey, and her new puppy, Christina. Ed would have been so delighted to meet them both. Daniel C. Potts, MD, FAAN is a neurologist, author, educator and champion of those with Alzheimer’s disease and other Dementias and their caregivers. Currently on staff at the Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Potts is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, was chosen as the AAN's 2008 Donald M. Palatucci Advocate of the Year, and is an Architect of Change at MariaShriver.com where he blogs monthly. A Pocket Guide for the Alzheimer's Caregiver, written by Dr. Potts and his wife, Ellen W. Potts, MBA is recommended as a resource by the AAN, the Alzheimer's Association, and Maria Shriver. On the medical school faculty of the Universities of Alabama and South Alabama, Dr. Potts also holds appointments in the Honors College and the Alabama Research Institute on Aging at The University of Alabama. Dr. Potts is co-convener and medical advisor of the ClergyAgainstAlzheimer’s Network, and is Editor-in Chief of Seasons of Caring, a multi-faith collection of meditations for Dementia caregivers. Inspired by his father’s transformation from sawmiller to watercolor artist in the throes of Dementia through person-centered care and the expressive arts, Dr. Potts seeks to make these therapies more widely available through his foundation, Cognitive Dynamics.

Proves that life does not end when someone gets Alz By michael neuvirth As a caregiver myself - I know that caregivers do not have a lot of time to read reviews. So lets cut to the chase. This book is a must read for any caregiver of a loved one with Dementia. There are so many great tips and insights in this book that you will not find anywhere else. So here is my short and sweet review: Buy it! Read it! Use it to improve your life and the life of the loved one you are caring for!!Ok, for those of you that want to read reviews - here goes . . .First of all, when I saw who was involved in this book - I knew I had to read it. Bet the jockey not the horse - and this in case - bet the jockeys.Marie Marley, Ph.D and Daniel Potts, MD both have already written amazing books dealing with Dementia. Plus, they are both former caregivers of loved ones with Dementia. Maria Shriver - who's famous father had Alzheimer's and who is an Alzheimer's advocate wrote the forward. Plus, Carol Bradley Bursack and Ellen Potts - both Alzheimer's care writers and experts - edited this book. The A Team!!!The book itself is incredibly didactic. It is filled with real life tips, tool and insights. You will learn so much in the short time it takes to read this book.Plus, the personal caregiving stories provided by Marie and Daniel make this book extra special. Through these stories - you will see both sides of the Alzheimer's coin. You will experience the caregivers' and the loved ones' points of view. .Most of all - you will see for yourself how caregivers and their loved ones CAN truly find moments of joy and be happy while living in the moment. You will also see how the loved ones truly enjoyed interacting with their caregivers - and vice-versa.The book provides hopes and inspiration for caregivers and their loved ones. It proves that life does not end when someone gets Alzheimer's and in many cases getting Alzheimer's opens a new and exciting chapter in the both the caregiver and the loved one's lives. In Daniel case - his father began to paint - something he had never done before and his paintings provided him a way to continue inspiring his family and his neighbors - just like he did before he had Alzheimer's.The biggest takeaway for me from this book is this quote: "Don't try to drag the person with Alzheimer's into your reality. Meet him in his."You will learn exactly what this means and how to achieve it when you read this incredible book.

It is full of practical advice which, if followed, can allow moments of hope and even joy to enter the lives of those who are so often overwhelmed by the stresses of caregiving. As someone who speaks often on the topic of "Caring for Caregivers," I shall be highly recommending this volume at all my presentations.

A Caregiver's Bible By Ann McHugh, DVM FINDING JOY IN ALZHEIMER'S New Hope for Caregivers is both a practical resource, and a poignant collection of personal experiences from the authors' lives. This is a must-read for all caregivers, whether the caregiver is family or friend, or professionally employed.I wish I'd had this book when my mother was diagnosed with dementia. It includes helpful tips for interacting with an Alzheimer's patient, when to consider a nursing home or even hospice care. My whole family would have benefitted from this guide, as we walked by our mother's side on her journey through Alzheimer's.But this book also takes you through the process of denial, and eventual acceptance of the disease. As it turns out, if you can get past the denial, fear and the frustrations of Alzheimer's, you can then move forward, in feeling those precious moments of joy, as your loved one feels them too, although they may not be recalled.I now volunteer for my local Hospice chapter, and I will recommend this book to every professional and every family member who is coping with Alzheimer's.
