Tender Story With a Lot of Depth By LoveBooks83 As Dylan Ryker is cleaning up his late father's affairs in Chicago, he finds a matchbook within an envelope hidden in the back recesses of a desk drawer. The matchbook is from a place called The Blue Flamingo in Pelago, Florida. Dylan is forever seeking clues to his mother's identity. His need to know her and why she left him pushes Dylan to consider whether she is connected with the Blue Flamingo.Alone and aimless without ties, Dylan takes to the road. His cross country wandering seems directionless until it leads him to Pelago. Not long after getting to town, Dylan is working at the Blue Flamingo bar for owner Rita Cornwall. This is where Dylan's story begins to flow. He is looking at every patron for connections. He knows his father must have visited the place once at some point in time and it must have some significance since the old man kept the matchbook. In Dylan's search for answers to unknown questions, he meets many interesting characters at the Blue Flamingo. The Blue Flamingo by Harrison is an entertaining tale full of multifaceted characters. Dylan is a character the reader can root for as he grows and changes with the story. His quest gives him a sympathetic edge and direction. Rita gave the book an edge. She is the world wary bar owner whose tender side is slowly revealed. Secrets are mixed throughout and Rita maintains some of the biggest. She is keen to let the past remain behind her as she continues moving forward. This is not an easy undertaking with Dylan seeking answers.Although The Blue Flamingo is a novella, there is a lot of depth within these pages to sink one's reading teeth into. Overall, the writing is good and it works to draw the reader into the plot. The Blue Flamingo is packed with supporting characters and it is at times difficult to remember how they relate to the story. Dylan Ryker narrates the novel in a sometimes conversational tone. Dylan is open, seems honest, yet there is always a hint of unreliability when the narrator speaks to the reader. I enjoyed Harrison's choice of narration because it made Dylan very personable. Overall, this was a tender story that ends with much more emotion than the beginning suggests.

A Quick, Easy Read about a Gen-Y Drifter By The Kindle Book Review I received a free copy of this book through The Kindle Book Review for an independent, fair, and honest review. (Kiwi Lisa)Overall, this is a quick, easy to read book. My honest opinion is the book is really written for young adults who will be able to identify with the main character Dylan.Dylan is in his early 20’s and the author has done a good job of capturing the arrogance and self-centred attitude of a young person. I found him to be quite an unlikable person but I think that is because I'm old enough to be his mother and he typifies the Gen-Y stereotype with his “it’s all about me” and “I don’t know what to do with my life” attitude.Dylan’s character drifts along slowly and a little aimlessly and resembled some real life Gen-Y'ers I have met. The point of Dylan’s journey was supposed to be to find his birth mother but while he started enthusiastically he seemed to quickly lose interest when he met the pretty, underage virgin working in the shop below his flat. Very quickly his hormones seemed to get in the way of his actual purpose for being in Florida in the first place.I think where the book fell down was in the lack of character development. The characters were all very one dimensional and a bit flat. The dialogue between characters was at times stilted and a bit awkward. I really would have liked to understand Dylan and his Birth Mother more. Why was Dylan such an apathetic individual and why did his sex life become more important than finding his birth mother? How did his Birth Mother pull herself up out of the depths of failure to make something of herself? And why, when she finally got herself on the right track, did she never bother to reconnect with her son?

By Don Sloan If you're looking for a superbly written, well-crafted piece of contemporary fiction, they don't get much better than Blue Flamingo by Joyce V. Harrison. The story begins when Dylan Ryker -- a young man in his early twenties -- leaves Chicago after the unexpected death of his father. Dylan doesn't really have a destination in mind. But, eventually, he winds up in Pelago, Florida, clutching a matchbook carried around for years by his dad. It has the name of a bar on it -- The Blue Flamingo.Dylan, desperately searching for his mother, who took off when he was a toddler, finds the seedy nightclub, and strikes up a friendship with the lounge's owner -- Rita Cornwall.Rita takes pity on the young man who washes up at her front door one day in dirty dungarees and several days shy of a shower. He becomes her new bartender and bouncer. Trouble is, the first person he bounces is a local half-wit with a biker buddy. Not good.Dylan winds up in the hospital several days later, courtesy of his new enemies. But one benefit of the beating is the visitation of a seventeen-year-old beauty who befriends him.Well, there's a little more to it than that but, hey -- this is something of a romance, after all.Things get complicated when Jena -- Dylan's new girlfriend -- leaves home after her super-religious father becomes abusive. She stays with a friend until her eighteenth birthday, but, on the night of her party, the bad boys return for revenge, and a host of surprises surface in the encounter's aftermath.Blue Flamingo is a story of lost hope, complicated relationships, and, ultimately, the power of love, both new and old. Its characters are flawed, but imminently believable, and the novella's pacing is spot-on.Five stars-plus to Blue Flamingo. Come on in for a cold draft beer. You'll be glad you did.
