Preview:

A Common Struggle by Patrick Kennedy is a memoir chronicling his struggles with mental illness and addiction. Patrick uses himself and his family as an example of the stigma and confusion surrounding mental illness in the US and explains the history of mental illness and mental health policy in that context.

Born in July 1967, Patrick Kennedy was the youngest of three children born to Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy and Virginia Joan Bennett Kennedy. Patrick suffered from severe asthma from a young age. While he did not like having asthma, he did like that his father paid more attention to him when he was having asthmatic issues. Patrick idolized his father and loved going on sailing trips with just the two of them. He also enjoyed the time he was able to spend with him on the campaign trail when Ted was campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1980…

Ray Many people suffering from mental or emotional illness don’t receive proper treatment because of the stigma surrounding such maladies. A Common Struggle by Patrick J. Kennedy, youngest child of the late Senator Ted Kennedy, and Stephen Fried, attempts to remove the stigma by sharing with the reader the troubles Kennedy had struggling with his own addiction problems and mental disorder, even while pursuing a career in politics.Instaread’s Summary & Analysis of Patrick J. Kennedy & Stephen Fried’s Common Struggle gives an excellent overview of the book, with a summary, introduction to the important people mentioned in the book, and an analysis of the themes and authors’ style.

(Mama's Little Minions) Mental illness is a large issue in our society today, so many people suffer from one type of mental illness or addiction or another and mental illnesses have to be one of the hardest illnesses to not only treat but to understand as well. The book A Common Struggle was written by Patrick J. Kennedy and Stephen Fried and is a journey through one man's life of mental illness and addiction. This summary from Instareads gives you the main characters (people) from the story as well as key points and things you should know before reading the entire story. I love instareads summaries because they really help you to know whether you will enjoy the full copy of the book or not. In this case I think this particular book could be a handy educational tool for someone who is either dealing with mental illness or addiction or someone who has a loved one or friend who is suffering. So many times we don't know how to help those who suffer and could even make it worse. This summary was fabulous at showing that this book, A Common Struggle, should be read by everyone.*Disclaimer: I recieved this product at no cost to me in order to facilitate this honest review.*

Thorough analysis of the people and issues By Ivy Reisner In a nutshell, this is a quick analysis of Patrick Kennedy's struggles surrounding mental health personally, in his family, as as matter of both policy and public perception and the perils of the stigma surrounding mental health issues, as well as the actions he has taken to resolve all of them. It is insightful, interesting, and engrossing. I'm kind of glad it was a fast read, or I might have missed my stop on the bus with this one. This is different than most instaread titles in that it does not have a list of key points and then an analysis of each, but rather a deep analysis of the people and issues under discussion. It is more in the style of a fiction summary with discussions on the people and the relationships between them, which works this book, as well as an analysis of the relationship between Patrick Kennedy's illness and his political career. As with most instaread titles, this one gives you enough to engage in discussions about the book, at least at a high level, and enough to decide if you want to read the book.I received a sample in exchange for an honest review.
