Runners feel a connection to one another, a bond formed with mutual respect. And yet, running is deeply personal, reminding us of our earliest days, when we could find simple joy in fresh air, and excitement in the rhythm of our movement. But running isn’t just child’s play. It can be a weapon against our deepest fears, giving us a means to fight our apprehension and doubt. We battle negative voices, and we overcome them. In the process, we learn a lot about ourselves, realizing we’re capable of more than we thought we were. In the Distance is a book about running, but it’s also a book about living. If you run, you’ll find yourself in the stories. You’ll associate with the fear and the struggle, and you’ll acknowledge the important lessons that are learned while running and racing. But this book isn’t just for runners. Every reader will become immersed in the heartwarming stories. You’ll feel a connection to the child, the competitor, the fighter, the learner, the seeker, the father, and the philosopher, all of whom appear within the same person, traversing through life one mile at a time.

About the Author About the Author Dave Griffin began running in 1976 as a high school freshman. He ran competitively through 1989 with PRs that include a 25:43 5M, a 32:11 10K and a 1:12:24 half marathon. In 1986, much the medial meniscus was removed during surgery to repair a non-running injury. The doctor advised Dave to stop running, warning that he would get arthritis if he continued. He returned to running and racing after the surgery, running some of his best races in 1987-89. After a 12-year period of casual running when his children were young, he returned to competitive running as a master. The doctor’s warning came true in 2005, when Dave developed arthritis in his right knee. The years since have been riddled with injury, including a stress fracture in his right medial condyle while training for the 2012 Boston Marathon. Dave started the Flying Feet Running Programs in 2004 while his daughter, Katie, was running in high school. The program has since grown to provide year-round coaching and support to runners of all experience and talent levels in the Carroll County, Maryland, area. Dave begin writing about running and life in 2006, when his bi-weekly column, Dave Griffin on Running, was introduced. In 2010, Dave published his first book, After the Last PR – The Virtues of Living a Runner’s Life. You can find Dave on the internet at www.flyingfeetrunning.com . Some of the books I carry are for racing advice, some for nutritional suggestions, some are historical stories but none of the books I sell and enjoy touch more people than Dave Griffin's books. His latest book, In the Distance, has been our top selling book in the store since it came out. We have newbies to seasoned runners finding inspiration and relatable stories through Dave's writing. Many runners are intimidated by running books for some reason because they think a true running book is for just the elite to appreciate but that's not the case with this book. I never thought we'd have a book to outsell Once a Runner but here I am ordering more copies of In the Distance to fill my store shelves for the holiday season!

Henderson Dave Griffin, author of After the Last PR―The Virtues of Living a Runner’s Life and bi-weekly columnist, has come up with yet another interesting look into the spiritual side of long-distance running, in the form of In the Distance: Why We Struggle Through the Demands of Running, and How It Leads Us to Peace. In the work, he recounts how his own background led him to adopt running as a way of coping with the stressors and daily demands of life. To someone coming from the relatively same background, no doubt his tale should bring many personal experiences to mind of having shared similar exertions and occasions. The thoughtfulness and care with which Griffin tells of the ups and downs of his running career, and the psychological insights that he provides into his own makeup should appeal to anyone coming from the arena of athletics. The author also shares his motivation for adopting running as a strategy for coping with life’s challenges, in preference to any other type of sport, including baseball. Given his involvement with the sport, it is all the more pleasing that In the Distance is not swamped with facts and figures about the races in which he has participated, but rather his account has soulful depth, with coverage of the events from a person-orientated viewpoint. Griffin is not ashamed to reveal his emotions at length, being, in fact, delightfully metrosexual in his approach. In this way, he appeals across the board to any athlete, no matter the gender. In fact, it is likely that many a woman who reads this book might wish that more of the men in her life took a similar approach to life as a whole. In the Distance reveals how Griffin evolved through the stages of innocence, fear, struggle and clarity to find peace in his life, with a focus on his running career, from boyhood to where he now stands, as a mature athlete. The work is illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs from past events in which he participated, and one cannot but help be drawn to this youthful, smiling figure, as well as to the more mature and older runner who has reveled in his sport his entire life through. This book deserves a place on any sport enthusiast’s shelf, as well as being an ideal read for book clubs, especially those of mixed gender.

There are many books available on running that talk about the technical aspects of the sport. However, this book talks about the reason why many runners run; namely, to attain greater personal fulfillment through the lessons that running teaches us. Griffin is a gifted writer who shares personal stories regarding the "softer" (i.e., not purely health related) benefits of running in a way that any individual involved in the sport (and even those that are not) can easily understand and appreciate. One of the most interesting aspects of the book is to observe Griffin's personal transition through life's many stages that are framed in the context of his running. I have read many technical books on running but have never encountered a book that clearly articulates the many benefits runners derive from their passion for the sport. I would highly recommend this book to any runner (and even non-runners) to gain a better understanding of why runners are attracted to the sport and continue to pursue it beyond the health benefits that running may provide. Thanks very much for an excellent book that is long overdue!
