Bob Welch was twenty-three, a World Series star, and promising young pitcher with the Los Angeles Dodgers when he realized he was an alcoholic. He became one of the first prominent athletes to discuss his ongoing treatment for addiction. His description of his time at the rehab center and his daily struggle to stay sober has been a guiding light to more than a generation of people, young and old, who face addiction in themselves or their families.

Prescott Bob Welch's successes on the ball field were fairly well known, but his troubles with alcohol off the field were not so well known. Welch doesn't pull any punches in this autobiographical work. He discusses his struggle with addiction and his recovery in depth. I thought his memories at Eastern Michigan University were especially enlightening because that is where he says many of his problems with alcohol grew. Little bit of history, just to tell you how good this guy was on the mound in his prime, he led an Eastern Michigan team to the CWS championship game in 1976, against Arizona. That was the last time a northern college/university team played for the CWS championship. It's going on 40 years since that feat has occured. Great book, not only about alcoholism, but a great human interest story.

This book saved my life. I was a reckless and misguided 22 year old powerlifter who knew he was a horrendous drinker but was not willing to admit he was an alcoholic. My concerned mother gave me this book.., suggesting I "might like it." I vividly remember lying on a girlfriend'so couch, legs draped over top, completely engaged w/ this story when I got to the 20 questions page and accepted that I was indeed an alcoholic and that it was not a moral issue but instead a disease. This acceptance, close to 33 years ago, saved my life. When Bob Welch died I was sad for weeks. He saved me. Great book.
