About the Author Paula Begoun is known worldwide as the "Cosmetics Cop" for her role as a consumer advocate and investigative researcher on skin care and makeup. From an early age, Paula struggled with skin issues, including acne and debilitating bouts of eczema. Frustrated by the ineffective treatments and products at the cosmetic counters and from dermatologists, Paula started examining the scientific research herself. Soon, she solved her skin problems by following published research on how skin functions and which cosmetic ingredients really work. Determined to help others find the best products for their skin, Paula has written 19 books on cosmetics and is one of the best-selling beauty authors of all time. Her books Blue Eyeshadow Should Be Illegal, Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me, and The Original Beauty Bible have helped women all over the world take the best possible care of their skin, while exposing what the cosmetics industry doesn’t want you to know. In 1995, Paula launched Paula’s Choice, which offers skin-care solutions for everything from acne to wrinkles. I decided to stop reading them and try to find my best skin care on my own. That was frustrating, too, but at least I wasn't paying for a magazine subscription on top of the sub-par products I chose.I first ran across Paula Begoun's books at the library. After reading and considering the information carefully, I started weeding out products based on her opinions and using products that have airtight packaging and ingredients she recommended. My skin started looking better, fast. This book discusses skin care basics and a few specialty treatments. First, care of skin types (dry, oily, combination) are addressed by category and basic routine. Particular types of cleansers, exfoliants, and moisturizers are suggested to comprise a basic skincare routine for each skin type.Following are chapters for caring for particular skin concerns such as acne, brown spots, rosacea, and eczema. There are advanced skin care routines for these skin care concerns. At the end of chapters, there are product recommendations, including some Paula's Choice products. I consider these suggestions, as many of them did not appeal to me. But they are useful, because you can find ingredients lists and find products more appealing to you.Medical topical applications, treatments, and tools get a mention, too. This part of the book is well updated from previous books, and even home lightbox treatments are given a nod of sorts.Altogether, this is sound skincare advice at a small price compared to magazines. OK, you can read the magazines if you want, but now you'll know if you should give more thought to the advice offered in them.I recommend the Kindle version of this book. As I read it, I found the highlighting feature very handy to view terminology on Wikipedia or the web, and to find photos of skin care concerns with which I was not familiar. And yes, it turns out I do have eczema, darn it! But now I know! There is a paucity of guidance for care of body skin; this book is aimed squarely from the neck up. Though I've read many of Paula's books, I can't rate this five stars. Not because it isn't good, and not because the information isn't updated. Simply because the body skin is largely ignored. Also, this book is clearly written for women, but as Paula herself says, men have skin, too. Men should read it, too, because the same skincare advice applies. In case you wonder if I buy Paula's Choice products, the answer is yes. I've tried many of them. They don't comprise my entire skincare routine, but I do use some as staples: any of her toners, the BHA 2% Perfecting Liquid, Resist 2% BHA Skin Lightening Gel, and the Skin Protecting 8% AHA gel (I use this product for my hands). Everything else I use I buy from other brands.

Rhodes This book contains good information about skincare -- whether it's wrinkles, oily/dry/sensitive, etc. skin, cosmetic procedures and more -- that's all based on science. If you've read Paula's other books, this one accomplishes a real feat: it's significantly shorter than anything she has ever published and does not attempt to be the be-all, end-all of product reviews and information. However, there are recommendations for skincare products which address a variety of skincare concerns, and they are -- for the most part -- widely available. My problem with this book, and what Begoun's work has ultimately become, is the marketing -- the way any one reading this book is led to believe that skincare products will literally take years off your face and solve the problems of aging (although I admit that Begoun does it more subtly and strategically than most). I have been a customer of Paula's own eponymous line of skincare products for 15 + years. They are mostly good. I have smooth skin for my age, but my face, along with the rest of me, is 43 and looks it. You could literally spend a fortune buying Paula's products (or others that she recommends) and the results -- at least in terms of wrinkles -- will be modest at best. It's self-delusion to look in the mirror and think that a serum took 10 years off of our face. It does. not. happen.Paula sells and recommends some categories of products that I believe don't really do anything for skin or, at least, very little -- and I admit that as someone who has been buying them for 15 + years; I have wasted a lot of money on serums and specialty products that have been seriously disappointing. Really, I think if I just used an exfoliant and wore sunscreen every day my skin would look essentially the same. Of course Paula would disagree, and claim that there is science to support what a multitude of ingredients can do for skin, but the science does not, in fact, reveal what percentage of an ingredient or combination of ingredients is necessary to achieve a result. I can tell you this from my own experience: most products will not produce "visible results" or make do on many or any of the claims on the label. If we are truly being honest with ourselves, I suspect many would agree with this. I know consumers like to tout the miraculous things that skincare products have done for their skin, but I just don't buy it. I admit my skin looks better using Paula's own products, but the results if I am being honest are subtle and likely due to diligent use of sun protection (which I owe 100% to Paula's work).I know I am going down a rabbit hole of opinions here, but my point is: take the information in this book with a giant grain of salt. Paula is not the person (very sadly) she used to be -- the one who told us we should never spend more than $30 on a skin care product; now, most of her products are way over $30 and many over $50; and some of her products have doubled and tripled in price. She's hardly what I would consider a consumer advocate now that she's hawking skin care of on trashy home shopping networks and appearing on junk science infotainment shows like Dr. Oz. There is endless hyperbole and cringe-inducing marketing on her own products. I once had a deep respect for Paula's work, but she's made it difficult to remain a fan and believe that she is even sincere (although, just to be honest, I am still a customer, albeit a more skeptical one).I am only giving this book 3 stars because, for the most part, you can get all of this information from the Paula's Choice website and/or by subscribing to her newsletters. Granted, it won't be as organized or as concise, but most of it is there. If you've read her other books, then this one isn't really necessary either. But what I really recommend is a healthy dose of skepticism when it comes to the information in this book. While I don't think it's full of lies, as consumers we should be honest with ourselves: we're all still gonna get old and there is nothing in a bottle that's going to change that -- not dramatically at least. But wear a lot of sunscreen, every single day; that's the best piece of advice I have ever gotten from Paula.* By the way, I did read this entire book and received it free with an order from Paula's Choice.

ONeal I love Paula's no-BS policy and have had good luck with her products, so it's not a surprise that I like this book quite a bit. It's a great overview of science-backed skincare and addresses topics such as acne (no matter your age), debunking myths, cosmetic procedures and more. I also really like the tone - factual but friendly. An index at the end would have been helpful.
