Butler Originally written and published a decade and a half after the turn of the last century (1915) by two of Jigoro Kano's student's, this book is an interesting, useful and valuable addition to your judo library with its beautifully translated language and historical photos. It represents Kano-sensei's art in its nearly original form, the book having been released about 30 years after the formal founding of kodokan judo. If you wish to "experience" judo as it was before it became an olympic sport, this book will go a long way toward accomplishing that for you. It's worth having even if it can be a bit challenging to get your hands on it. My copy took well over a month to arrive.

For those interested in a classical study of Judo By Ryan Grady A wonderful book for those who love classical Judo and are upset with competition Judo. It gives claerly translated explanations of tricks or techniques that are not far removed from Kano himself. It discusses, in an indirect fashion, the notions of energy that are so important in Judo.
