2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Antquities Through an Antique Window By Phyllis Mollenhauer Joseph Anderson has separated into six lectures(ca 1879) his observation of the evidences found in Scotland of Early Christian practices. These are: *Materials and Methods: '...the means of obtaining a scientific basis for the archeology of Scotland.' joseph anderson *Structural Remains: of the early Celtic Church sites in Scotland, *Structural Remains: including early Celtic Church sites in Ireland which Anderson views as essential. 'The ultimate establishment of the Christian church in this country was the work of Irish Ecclesiastics, and was therefore an extension into Scotland of the ecclesiastical system then prevailing in Ireland.' joseph anderson *Existing Relics: Concerning books and manuscripts, 'So slowly do we awaken to the special interest of the antiquities of our own country, that it is only of recent years, when Assyria, Egypt, Greece and Rome have been well ransacked that attention has begun to be directed to the great storehouse of national history and native art that exists almost unutilized in the early [monumenta (italicized)] of our ancestors.' joseph anderson *Existing Relics: Concerning bells in particular, and implements, etc., 'The sanctity attaching itself to such relics has been sufficient in other quarters [of Scotland] to preserve them unguarded and unconcealed, in some instances resting on tombstones in open graveyards where no church has existed to shelter them for centuries.' joseph anderson *Existing Relics: Concerning crosiers and reliquaries, '...the fact is established that it was an ancient custom of the Christian people of Erin and Alba to carry such relics into battle with them.' joseph anderson Eighty-seven illustrations of line drawing and wood cut type are very informative as well. It's like reading the notes of a field archeologist who knows what he is looking at and can converse easily about it.
