Part documentary, part reality-television, the story of the Deadliest Catch’s Alaskan crab fishermen risking their lives in the Bering Sea to make a buck and feed their families has captivated the world. Giving the Finger follows the life of the spirited young captain who has emerged as one of the most talked-about figures on the show, Scott Campbell Jr., who leads the crew of the Seabrooke. As this book--a prequel to Junior’s ascent to fame--shows, the trials of crabbing are not limited to living at sea and working the most dangerous job on the planet, but carry over to family and friends, and are usually stormier than the Bering. Junior began his life as a fisherman in the shadow of his father, Scott Campbell Sr., and has struggled consistently to gain his own reputation as a captain. Arguably, one of the best fishermen working the waters today, Campbell Jr. has certainly done that, but not without sacrifice, of all sorts. Campbell has divorced and re-married the same woman three times, endured handicapping injuries and lost crew members to the icy waters of the north. Giving the Finger gives a first person account of these losses and the everyday fight for life and love, and shows that by hard work and perseverance, even a kid from Walla Walla, Washington, can become a star.

Giving the Finger: Risking It All to Fish the World's Deadliest Sea, by Scott Campbell, Jim Ruland

From Booklist Campbell, famous for his role in Deadliest Catch, will likely surprise his fans with this thoughtful and nuanced look at the hard reality of an Alaskan fisherman, including when he almost lost a finger. With writer Ruland he documents the fishing life he was born into. Campbell pulls no punches as he decries his school difficulties and late diagnosis of dyslexia, his frustration with having to hold together the small family farm in Washington while his father was away working in Alaska, and the struggle to find a place for himself amid relentless hazing by his father’s crew. The overwhelming casualty in all this was his relationship with his high-school sweetheart and wife, Lisa. Their personal travails remove any romance from the fishing life, and Campbell makes clear all that he has missed, such as the births of his daughters and family birthdays, adding up to years of disappointments that resulted in devastating marital strife. Campbell does provide expected blow-by-blow accounts of his fishing exploits, but this autobiography packs a far more serious and emotional punch. --Colleen Mondor

Never liked Junior until I read this book, now I love him By Mathgod I have to admit that I put off reading this book because of the title (I guess I am a little prudish) and because I never really liked Junior on the show BUT this book gave me a whole different perspective about him.Unlike what Elliot implies on the show, Junior was NOT given everything by his daddy. This man worked hard and had a challenging childhood situation.Junior is candid about his strengths and his flaws. Well rounded and enjoyable. And the title gets explained right away and is appropriate.

I picked up Scott Campbell Jr.'s book for a few dollars off of another webiste. Before reading this book, I was never much of a Junior fan. But I now look at him a bit differently. I read Sig Hansen's book a few years ago, and enjoyed that one as well. But what I really liked about Junior's book is that he did a good job explaining the nautical terms used in the book for those of us who have never been around boats.Another aspect I liked about Junior's book is that he really goes into detail describing how physical the grunt work of being a greenhorn or deckhand on a Bering Sea fishing vessel can be. Junior also really lays out how amazing the money can be and how sleep-deprived crew members are during a trip. The thing that really opened me eyes to another side of Junior was when he detailed losing a crew member (Keith "Moose" Criner) forever over the side of the Seabrooke prior to the boat being featured on the "Deadliest Catch." I either forgot about that or don't remember that ever being touched upon in any of the "Deadliest Catch" episodes. The book does have some lighter moments, however. Junior talks about the mixed lot a captain will encounter when hiring deckhands who the captain does not know. The most amusing part of the book, IMO, was Junior talking about a deckhand who was making lunch for the crew while he had his hand in his pants and was scratching his balls. Junior wrote that after seeing that, he made himself a sandwich for lunch instead of eating's the meal prepared for by the cook. Junior also wrote in the book about having to handle thieves on the boat over the years. This is an entertaining book, but the reason I went with four stars instead of five is that it is very short. I wish the book would have been a little longer. The book is only 250 pages, with many pictures included. A reader will have no problem finishing the book in a couple reading sessions.
