Describes in the words of Mark Twain and others the National Parks beauty around 1919. What I enjoyed was the history of each National Park.: who explored and documented their mystic wonder and the Indian accounts in the old west.

It was written around 1919, so none of the newer parks are represented. This does not diminish the value of the book. The history of the older parks, such as Yellowstone, Glacier, the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, the volcanic parks, Mt. Rainer, Crater Lake and many others are very interesting. This is a valuable piece of our heritage and the author did a wonderful job with this book. I highly recommend it for the historical value as well as the subject matter.

Shirley This review refers to the kindle edition of: The Book of National Parks byRobert Sterling YardFirst off, if you are looking for a current and complete reading of the National Parks either for travel or just to learn about them, this book will probably not be of too much help to you. However, if you are interested in learning about the history of the earliest parks, how they came to be National Parks(and Monuments); how they developed geologically over the ages including a great lesson in rock formation of various kinds; and descriptions of the beauty to behold as well as the tourist aspect from the early 20th century, you will find this book to be an excellent read.Published in 1919, there were what compared to today's figure only a handful of parks - 18 - some not even in states yet; for example in Alaska. Just after the war in Europe, people were looking for some of America's own beauty. Yard has obviously done some extensive research of the parks and the monuments. He not only has visited the parks and is able to describe the scenic beauty, travel to and through the sites, and statistics on various aspects, but also gives an excellent scientific looks at the progress of the creation of such awesome sights. He breaks down the parks by the rock formations from which they have evolved.Contents:PrefaceThe Book of National Parks - On the Appreciation of Scenery1. The National Parks of the United StatesTHE GRANITE NATIONAL PARKS -Granite's Part in Scenery2. Yosemite, the Incomparable3. The Proposed Roosevelt National Park4. The Heart of the Rockies5. McKinley, Giant of Giants6. Lafayette and the EastTHE VOLCANIC NATIONAL PARKS -On the Volcano in Scenery7. Lassen Peak and Mount Katmai8. Mount Rainier, Icy Octopus9. Crater Lake's Bowl of Indigo10.Yellowstone, a Volcanic Interlude11. Three Monsters of HawaiiTHE SEDIMENTARY NATIONAL PARKS12. On Sedimentary Rock in Scenery13. Glaciered Peaks and Painted Shales14. Rock Records of a Vanished Race15. The Healing WatersTHE GRAND CANYON AND OUR NATIONAL MONUMNENTS -On the Scenery of the Southwest16. A Pageant of Creation17. The Rainbow of the Desert18. Historic Monuments of the Southwest19. Desert Spectacles20. The Muir Woods and Other National MonumentsYard gives vivid descriptions of each park including best ways to travel through them - for that time. At times, these descriptions went on a bit too much for me. For me, the most interesting was learning about the background, history ,people and culture of the areas and the beauty in the development over the millions of years. These parks really need to be seen to be appreciated, but the I found the read very worthwhile and informative. The kindle - 4586 locations. For the most part the text and format(except for a couple of things) was very good. There may have been a couple of typos and sometimes the beginning of a chapter had a space between the first and second letter of the first word. Nothing to complain about there. However, there were a couple of things that actually made me take a star of this review. First of all, there are some charts representing the progress of creation. The way they are formatted in this kindle, sometimes cuts off part of the information. But my bigger complaint would be that although there are many, many illustrations, maps and diagrams listed in the contents, they are no where to be found in this edition. Sometimes, Yard even tells us to refer to the picture of map, but we can't. I think there is even a missing picture of a very rare site that no longer existed. This was disappointing. So all in all an educational read 4 star read, but certainly not up-to-date.But 3 stars on this kindle edition.Happy Trails.....Laurie
