About the Author Edward Yu is a Feldenkrais Practitioner and the author of The Art of Slowing Down: A Sense-Able Approach to Running Faster. In his spare time, he likes to roll around on the floor, walk in circles and stare into space. Most of his classes and workshops are in fact, an excuse to get other people to roll around on the floor, walk in circles and stare into space (or at least to momentarily look beyond the ubiquitous liquid crystal display monitor). Edward currently resides in the economy section of an Airbus 380, but dreams of settling down with his wife somewhere on the Iberian coast.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I really wanted to like this book By Jeffry C. Branit I really wanted to like this book. It is written by a Feldenkrais practitioner and martial artist. I am involved in both so I thought I would get a lot out of it. Unfortunately, while many of the ideas presented are interesting, this book is badly in need of an editor. To the writer: if you have to use phrases like "in other words", "to put it another way", "that is to say" over and over again, you need to work on your thinking or your skills as a writer. Only a few key ideas are repeated over and over again. The ideas presented in this book could have been done so in less than 200 pages, instead of the 450 pages needed in this book. The core ideas presented in this book are better written about in books by Moshe Feldenkrais ,Thomas Hanna, Frank Wildman, Todd Hargrove etc. There are a few fresh ideas presented within these pages, but it really wasn't worth the trudge through 450 pages to get.The only practical knowledge I got was an introduction to Primal Moves, MovNat, and Ido Portal. Put this at the bottom of your list if you're interested in Somatics, body awareness, improving fitness etc.

Our current societal view of fitness in archaic, based only on a few external metrics. It is a concept that addresses only a small percentage of the population, those who "go to the gym" and "workout". Our definition of fitness does not include anything that is universally applicable to humanity. The definition of fitness involves being fit for something and the expanded definition, the biological portion of the definition implies being fit for a certain environment or being able to adapt to our current environment/environments, in other words being fit for life, for OUR life. The book is somewhat controversial because not everyone can break with the current mass acceptance of externally regimented exercise as a definition of fitness. But with the explosion of neuro-plastic research, the new knowledge of the brains capabilities, we need a defintion of fitness that goes back to the roots of the words meaning. It is the brain that controls movement and a definition of fitness that leaves out the brain is not worthy of the 21 st century. Our limited concept of fitness as "physical fitness" only must be enlarged upon.Edward Yu does a wonderful job of making we are all dully aware of concerning the insufficiency or our current fitness model crystal clear. Yu gives learning it's rightful place in fitness and personal developement. You may recall the 10,000 hours of practice necessary to master a new skill as mentioned in the book Mastery by Robert Greene, yet it is not just the hours of practice that are necessary, but 10,000 hours of mindful practice. Read this book and you will not look at fitness or the mass marketing of "fitness" in the same way again.
