In the middle of a glorious nowhere, there is a valley – the North American continent’s largest alpine valley – where a hermit and his canine friends live. Surrounded by mountains, when summer comes, another sort of magic visits the valley: wildflowers, including the common sunflower, Helianthus Annuus. This book is a collection of the hermit photographer's own favorite sunflower photos and a miscellany of quotations, poetry, short stories, and trivia about those magnificent flowers.

Education, story, and lovely pictures By sara It always warms my heart to read what Author Leland and his canine trio share with us. This book is full of wonderful pictures and you may just learn a thing or two about sunflowers along the way, with stories to be shared in between. I grow sunflowers all around my place in honor of my grandfather, a brilliant author Bryce Courtenay who has passed from this earth, and I will have to grow more, and think of Mr. Leland and his canine trio, and thank mother nature as my boys collect the seeds to be toasted. Will have to get this book for my personal library ( I first read it on my kindle)

Silk, Author/Reviewer Author and Photographer Leland Dirks is well noted for his gifted stories and beautiful photos of nature surrounding his self-built desert home in San Luis Valley, Colorado. This book contains 108 pages of photographs of my favorite flower, the Sunflower. His writings contain words of wisdom, as depicted in "Sunflowers and Ants." Another story is sad, but a very worthy read, "To Climb A Mountain." He includes several notable quotes from such people as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Charlotte Brontë, Virginia Woolf, and more. Dirks writes from his heart and soul and his words spread compassion and love through all his readers. I have to add...Oh, wouldn't it be nice to be like a sunflower? To face the joy of seeing the sun rise in the east, enjoy the brightness of the day, and nod our heads as the sun fades and we can rest in peace. Highly recommend the print copy of this story. It's a classic keepsake.

By Debra J Smith Purchased through Amazon, I've been waiting--impatiently--for it to arrive.A quick read (even for me--slow reader), but I'll be pouring over this one again and again. And again. Many tidbits of information I didn't know about sunflowers carefully planted throughout, with little pearls of wisdom, poems, engaging short stories--that I want more of!!--and, of course, gorgeous photos. I have my favourites, but I'm not saying ;) -- lets just say it involves silhouettes.Yup, this one's a keeper. Only wish it was available in hardboud. It would be worth the cost. And I LOVE the matte finish cover! From now on, all of my books will have matte covers--makes holding the book an even better experience!Thank you, Mr. Dirks!
