For example: the author writes about 'natural selection' and then mentions some groups that are not fit to be 'part of the social heritage of our fathers'. I will copy a bit from this chapter at the bottom of this review, so you can see for yourself.This book will be interesting for anyone who wants to know more about the history of psychology, it gives a fascinating look into past ideas about people, but it is too dated to be useful as a book to learn about current insights in psychology. As a book on the history of psychology I give this book 4 stars, but as a book on psychology only 2 stars because the information is too obsolete.The contents of this book:CHAPTERI. MPH REVIEW OF THE FIVE BITE DIET By MPH This book is just as long as it needs to be... in fact, it could be shorter, it basically explains the basic principles and reasons "why" the five bite diet is the absolute best diet IN THE WORLD. How do I know? because I never even read it... I read bits and parts after I had already lost all of the weight. Let me explain my story in about 2-3 sentences:I was really fat, over 220 POUNDS, my friend's personal physician is in fact Dr. Lewis. Dr. Lewis tell's him about the diet, he tells me, we both start it. First three days excruciating, no breakfast, no high fat drinks, but it felt good to eat whatever I wanted, even though it was only five bites... I went on the diet for a month and a half straight, with no deviations, and guess what? the weight I tried to get off for years which only resulted in gaining weight, all came off, over forty pounds of it. Let me say this again: THIS TOOK 1 1/2 MONTHS TO LOSE OVER FORTY POUNDS!!! Lets get another thing straight... I went to the gym before the diet, and gained weight... while on the diet, I DID NOT VISIT THE GYM ONCE.Anybody who puts this diet down, is, in my opinion is [re...bleep...ed]... I don't want to be mean, but seriously, this works, it comes off fast... nobody, I mean, nobody should want to be on this diet forever, get it over and done with... get in get out. it is hard, but so doable... Imagine what it feels like to be THAT MUCH HEALTHIER in such little time...I understand that many of you reading this will still not agree, but its sad, really sad, because you are probably fat, and will be fat forever, unlike me. There is literally nothing I can say to these people that would ever convince them, so to all of you who hate me now, I really do wish you the best of luck on your weight watchers or whatever other crap diet you will try in your lifetime that will ultimately fail, and probably cause you to get even fatter eventually. In the meantime I will be busy feeling great, being thin, and getting to eat whatever the hell I want and enjoy life, because whenever I gain any weight back (like a pound) I go right back on the diet for a day, and not surprisingly, I'm right back to normal :)BUY THIS BOOK, IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!Best,MPH

54 of 58 people found the following review helpful. Portion control, what a concept! By Amazon Customer I devoured this book as soon as it arrived. I quickly began the diet a year ago and quickly lost 35 lbs.. I then went off the diet and successfully maintained my weight. Your "hungerstat" is reset with this diet so after you go off it you will get full very quickly so you listen to your body and stop when you are full. So you apply common sense and the weight will stay off. I am on it again to lose an additional 10 lbs and I'm on day 4 and down 3.4 lbs. Yes the first 3-4 days are tough, they are tough on any diet where you have to get used to lower portions but our bodies adapt quick and the weight will melt off. I'm a huge fan and I'll use and advocate this diet for the rest of my life. Dr Lewis says if you want extreme results you have to try something extreme, so yes this diet makes some people think we and him are crazy but it's not meant for long term. He says no one likes to diet, so do it and get it over with and get off the diet rollercoaster and thats just what I have done. I now have the tools to manage my weight for life thanks to this book and Dr Lewis!

From Library Journal Berlinski (Black Mischief: The Mechanics of Modern Science, LJ 2/15/86) presents an unconventional work on the foundations of calculus. It is in part an informal history of the subject, the author inrerweaves the historical fragments with expository sections that explain the concepts from a modern viewpoint. He gives special attention (very appropriately) to the concept of limits and to several of the fundamental theorems that underpin calculus. He also shows how differential calculus deals with rates of change and how integral calculus works to determine areas under curves. Writing in a breezingly informal style, the author includes a plethora of humorous asides as well as a number of clearly fictitious anecdotes. At times his prose gets a bit too ripe, but the overall effect is to make the book quite readable. The work should be especially useful for providing perspective to college and advanced high school students currently learning calculus. Recommended for all public and college libraries.?Jack W. From Booklist Even those who flailed through calculus class sense the power and perfection of that branch of mathematics, and Berlinski rekindles the interest of lapsed students in this pleasing excursion through graphs and equations. Berlinski's goal is to explain the mystery of motion and the area and volume of irregular shapes, issues that gave rise to Leibnitz and Newton's invention of calculus. He makes his points one concept at a time, but not so dryly as asking and answering, "What is a function?" 132 of 160 people found the following review helpful. Mathematically poor and stylistically overdone By Michael Maltenfort (maltenfort@yahoo.com) I hoped for an insightful view into calculus. Indeed, there are many deep and interesting aspects of calculus which are generally obscured in a typical calculus textbook (or in a calculus class). This is not such a book.Most disappointing was the constant distraction of mathematical errors, small and large, throughout the book. For example, there are typos, errors in notation, and misleading or confusing notation. For these problems, I understood the author's intention at these points (being a calculus teacher myself), but to a reader less familiar with calculus, these problems will hinder understanding. When a reader can't understand the mathematical details, much of the meaning is lost.A few errors were utterly irreparable, such as the proof of the Intermediate Value Theorem. In that case, a correct proof would diverge greatly from that of the author. This specific error is unfortunate because it is for this theorem that the author develops the real numbers (which takes chapters), and upon this theorem that all later theorems are based.Finally, I found the author's style annoying, especially the fictional accounts of specific actions taken by historical mathematicians (crossing a river, contemplating calculus while sitting in an overstuffed chair, etc.). The author must enjoy hearing himself wax poetic on any subject which enters his head, but I don't.The book's back cover likens this book to Douglas Hofstadter's classic _Godel, Escher, Bach_, but the comparison is laughable. Hofstadter's book has a direct and clear style of writing, whereas _A Tour of the Calculus_ is unfocused and its numerous errors makes it is mathematically a sham.

By Mockingbird I seem to be rather in the minority when I say that I actually liked Berlinski's verbose style; frankly, I don't really see what was so difficult to understand about it. On the other hand, I approached this book from the position of wanting something fun to read, and that's what I got, with the welcome addition of what I thought was lovely writing - if I had been searching for something that would give me an in-depth look at calculus, I would have looked elsewhere. Basically, I thought the book was really well-written and exciting (I had just begun calculus when I read it, so I found it really interesting to look at all the stuff we hadn't yet done.), and I highly reccomend it for a piece of fun reading and a decent overview.

By Kevin Urban By reading some of these reviews, one thing is obvious: anyone who first lists their qualifications as a mathematician or calculus teacher is basically going to nay-say the heck out of the book. And in a way, I'd say this is semi-appropriate: the book is definitely not a math book; I think the grievances arise basically because it's sold as one. Sure, the word "tour" is in the title, but that does little to suggest that this book would be more appropriately marketed as....well....a memoir? Maybe?Don't get me wrong though: the book isn't absolutely terrible. Some commenters have derided the author for using words that are too big, widely unknown, etc. But that's one of the things I enjoyed about the book: a few years back when I read it I underlined every word I didn't know or was fuzzy about and used this book as a way to build my vocabulary. I wouldn't describe myself as a cheery optimist, but I definitely turned the heightened language of the book to my advantage...instead of just whining about it on Amazon.As for learning calculus: if you are a new student to calculus, this book won't really help. I bought this book years ago as a supplement to my calculus course and quickly found I was just wasting my time reading it. If you are a non-mathematician and just want a little glimpse into calculus, then this might be a good book. I would laugh at anyone who said they learned calculus from the book though.In other news (finally, my qualifications...bla, bla, bla): since I've bought the book, I've taken all the calc and differential equations courses, abstract and linear algebra courses, analysis courses, graduated with a degree in physics and have completed one year of graduate school physics. With this in mind: Upon re-reading sections of the book recently, I would say that this is a pretty fun SUMMER READ for super nerds who already know it all, but just want to leisurely read about some elementary calculus by an author who writes in a conversational tone.

I've been reading books of this ilk for nearly a decade and I am very impressed with the writing style; it piques your imagination with just enough detail to immerse you into each scene and leads you through the journey alongside the main characters.The Waking Dream has renewed my faith in the genre and gives hope that there is much more to the zombie roller coaster than the lather, rinse and repeat mode (bite the victim, turn the victim and repeat) that a lot of these books seem to be in. A definitive fresh take on an overwritten, often over hyped genre. I am really looking forward to the continuation of this story and more from this author.While not overly immersed with gore and viscera, this book does have its share of violence, but it is definitely not a detractor for the reader.

Like castile soap is not one of my favorites. I don't feel it leaves your hair or skin clean and shiny an the other ingredients I tried too. It leave my hair grease or dry.

I have seen and read a lot of different shampoo recipes and this book so far is one of my favorites. Saying this I can't tell you how well the recipes work. I have not used any of these recipes personally. I have tried other homemade shampoos and I have never liked one of them. My husband loves homemade shampoo so I make it for him. This does not mean the recipes in this book aren't good by any means. I just don't like homemade shampoo! I do recommend this book to anyone who wants to try homemade shampoo or wants some new recipes.

No mention that Castile soap is incredibly alkaline and that you should use an 4% acidic rinse after using to bring hair pH back to almost normal. Do not rinse this out of your hair. Also do not add oil to your Castile soap shampoo as it makes your hair a greasy clumpy mess! And rinse the shampoo very well out of your hair then acid rinse!

I have just started in digital illustration and concepts so it can be confusing at times. Often it'll say things like "Refine your painting" which is an empty statement to new people. It shows step by step methods for various kinds of mechanical/futuristic things with instructions worded to allow the artist to create unique pieces. Good for both the digital illustrator and the old fashioned illustrator.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Light after dark By Robin Photographer Lynn Saville discovers the virtues of artificial light in this collection urban work. It could be street, office or security lights, garish neon and shop decorators naked bulbs but they all create an intriguing palette of colors and shadows. After dark many of the buildings sites in the photos have enhanced texture created by light from different directions. On page ninety-one there's a fabulous shot of abandoned restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, beautifully framed against a black sky, even when not lit a large vertical neon sign saying JACK'S provides the color while the white brickwork changes into various shades of grey as it ages. A similar photo of a boarded up warehouse in Chicago provides an interesting display of ochre brickwork and red panels over the windows. Detroit, the urban ruins capitol of America, provides a brilliant straight on photo of the huge abandoned Michigan Central Depot lit by unseen spotlights from below.Empty stores and those being renovated seem to fascinate Lynn Saville, minus the merchandise means large expanses of glass and bare walls creating slabs of changing color depending how near they are to neon strips and spotlights used by interior decorators. Of the eighty photos in the book only one has a visible person suggesting that all this street night light is not used for most of the time. The photos were taken in various cities but without their daylight visible landmarks these places at night become an anonymous collection of shapes, shadows, color and silence.Lynn Saville has captured a worthwhile collection light and dark in her book.

Saville sees urban landscapes with a true artist's eye. These night scenes are at once desolate, mysterious and beautiful. They will not be forgotten any time soon.

My family kept promoting meat eating since ‘the dawn of time’ and we always used to eat meat throughout the day. At some point I saw that I was getting fat and I wanted to lose this fat. And nothing what I did (even restricting calories) worked. I used to go on crash diets, track my calories etc. but nothing worked. Then I understood that I needed to change my lifestyle so I tried to go vegan. It was hard at first, but this book helped me by providing me with some awesome recipes. If you are considering to go vegan or you already are vegan and want to discover some awesome recipes, get this book.

By Neville Patil When I was still in high school, we recited a declamation entitled "Vegan Poem", which tackles about people should be vegetarians. But this poem focuses on the rights of the animals, but when I found out about the health benefits of being a vegetarian, I was really interested. There are a lot of diet books and losing weight, but I guarantee you that there is no better diet than eating vegetables and fruits. There are a lot of side effects of eating meat, but have you heard a side effect or disadvantage of eating vegies? So I have decided, I will be a vegetarian and looked for a really good book to help me thought it found this book. I am just in my 1st week now and I can say I am doing great with it. There a lot of easy made recipes, and of course super healthy and delicious! Every meal of the day, even snacks, smoothies and desserts. The result is really evident in me, just last friday, we had a get together, and my friends told me that I am looking radiant, and that is due to my new found nutritionist, this book. Great job!

Billy Joel once called it “an acoustic nightmare.” Rodger Waters called the place “a real compromise.” And Robert Plant said, “This is the first gig I’ve ever done that was rained out inside the building.” However, what they might not have understood at the time was that this place was a temple to all of us in South Florida. It was a sacred place where we would gather and worship at the altar of Hard Rock. It was where we went to hear angels sing. It was the place the rock god Brian Johnson screamed out, “Oh, Let there be rock!” I am talking about the Hollywood Sportatorium in the 1980s. I’m talking about a place in Rock ‘n’ Roll history that existed for 18 years as the only venue of its kind in all of South Florida to see rock music live. The Hollywood Sportatorium, or The Sporto as we called it, was the venue in South Florida where everyone came to play like Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Def Leppard, Guns N' Roses, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Mötley Crüe, Night Ranger, Poison, Quiet Riot, Ratt, Triumph, Foreigner, Twisted Sister and Van Halen just to name a handful. It was the place where we would all go to see all of our favorite bands. If you were a rock band and you never played the Sporto, then you just hadn’t made it to the top like Foreigner sang about in the song “Jukebox Hero.” The Sporto was an arena that held 15,532 rock souls and was THE place for live rock concerts in South Florida. The building does not exist anymore. However, it still stands in the four corners of my heart and soul. I can still see the whole place in my mind’s eye. I can still smell the cigarette and pot smoke in the air. If I close my eyes long enough, I can hear the sounds of the last Heavy Metal Band to ever play there, Judas Priest in September of 1988 singing “Turbo Lover.” Some of the best memories of my entire life lay forever in the four walls of the Hollywood Sportatorium. I heard some of the greatest bands the world of music had to offer. I heard bands right in the middle of their prime. I saw bands play before anyone knew who they were and I watched bands play long after their peak and everything in between. I stood witness to the greatest era in rock ‘n’ roll. I stood in abject awe watching and listening to the last generation of master musicians that could actually play their instruments. I came of age in a magical time in music. I was there and grew up during 1980’s Hard Rock scene.

Loved reading this book and reliving the experiences through your words. What great times, stories and musical comradery we had. I miss being at a show...the lights going out... And now you have seconds to jump the seats and get as close to the stage as you could. The Sporto made this all possible and I am privileged and glad this book exists. Thanks C.
