By Carla Bowen I was not a big tea drinker, but gave the plan a try because I wanted to lose some weight and kick my addiction to diet soda, which I had read makes you crave sweets even more and is full of nasty chemicals. In the past I found that drinking coffee all the time affected my sleep patterns, so I thought maybe tea would be better. It really was. I have never before been able to give up diet soda without massive headaches, but on this plan it was no big deal at all. I actually felt better and clearer mentally, rather than worse.I lost 8 pounds on the plan in 7 days, as part of the original test panel. I was never hungry or really craving specific junk foods, and I never got a headache. Most of the time I was occupied with preparing and drinking tea and the smoothies, so I didn't feel like I was waiting to eat something. The only problem I did experience was that I became a little bit dehydrated by about the third day. It takes me about half an hour to brew and drink a 10 oz cup of tea vs. about 5 minutes to open and guzzle a 20 oz diet coke, so my fluid consumption went down until I realized this and made an effort to drink more water.I don't have a blender at work, but I found that making the smoothies at home in the morning and carrying them in a big travel mug was pretty easy. I also don't really cook, so I was intimidated by the recipes, but I ended up just eating foods that followed the principles of the plan, like a broiled chicken breast and a salad or vegetable, rather than making the exact specific recipes. I was able to stick close enough to the plan to lose the weight without learning the specific recipes or even figuring out where to find the ingredients in the grocery store.This is a plan that anyone can follow, and assuming you have some weight to lose, you will lose it.

I've lost 3 inches off my tummy By Lucy Cassidy I answered a social media post to be part of the Tea Cleanse test panel in March, and I was pretty skeptical. The author didn’t give me any payment (or even provide the tea), but by day 3 I was hooked! I lost 5 pounds in 3 days (and 10 pounds overall). But that wasn’t even the biggest change:--My belly got noticeably flatter in just the first few days (even my husband noticed by day 3)--I had way more energy (no more 3 pm slump!)--I never felt hungry, even though I was skipping breakfast--I started sleeping betterTo do this cleanse, you basically drink 5 cups of tea a day, make one tea-based smoothie, and have a normal dinner. What was most fun for me was exploring the different kinds of teas, all of which have specific weight-loss properties, according to studies the author cites. Plus, having herbal tea at night really cut my cravings for dessert.I’m not “cleansing” any more but this book has changed the way I feel and look. I’m still down in weight (14 pounds now after 21 days), I’ve lost 3 inches off my tummy, and most important of all, I feel great! I’m more energetic and I feel much less stressed than I have in years. Even though this book is marketed as a 7-day plan, it’s really a lifestyle change.

By Trish Nemeth Nine days ago I started drinking black, green, white, blueberry (I couldn't find barberry or bilberry), and rooibos tea. I already eat mostly clean, whole foods. I just can't give up bread and pasta. I make my own flatbreads and I use rice or quinoa pasta. I didn't follow this cleanse as the book says, but I did notice I lost a pound per day until I had pasta for dinner, three nights in a row. I lost no weight at all. So I switched it up and now I only eat carbs and fruits early in the day and just drink tea all day long and have meat or eggs and veggies for dinner and I'm still losing weight incredibility fast. I've been eating breakfast, a smoothie from the book for lunch, and a small dinner no later than 7:00 pm. I'm 45 years old, perimenopausal, and gained about 25 pounds over the last 3 years and nothing I've tried has helped me lose any weight at all, in fact I just kept gaining. No more! I can't believe I've already lost 9 pounds in 10 days!!! My clothes fit better and I feel so comfortable. My gut feels better, my digestion has improved, my mood has improved, and I'm ecstatic over the change in how I look. There is no doubt in my mind that it is from the tea. I was an avid coffee drinker, I thought I would miss my coffee and mourn it like a lost friend, but I don't even miss it at all. I know for the rest of my life I will be an avid tea drinker. As I write this, this book has only been out for a few hours. I'm able to review it now because I was going to see my endocrinologist before the release date, had a bunch of questions for Jay, and rather than answer them all individually, Jay sent me a draft (and after I read it he still spent a half hour on the phone with me for free- what a guy!). Being a draft, there might be a few differences between this and the final copy available here on Amazon; I'll edit my review if necessary once I get my hands on the final draft.TRT is a complicated subject, but Jay makes it about as understandable as possible. The point he drives home the hardest is that we live in a testosterone-deprived age. So many people are drugging themselves on SSRI's in an effort to keep from being depressed, Nootropics to stay alert and focused and, most commonly, boner-pills to keep their sex-life going...and after all that they still often feel like s***. Many of these men just suffer from low testosterone. "Low" doesn't always just mean out of range, but sub-optimal, and optimal can vary by the individual. Just because you're "in range" doesn't mean you're at optimum health. Optimizing this declining hormone can be an effective way to treat all of these symptoms by simply controlling the levels of a hormone your body should be making naturally anyway!"The Definitive TRT Manual" takes much of the mystery and confusion out of this subject, and there are lots of advanced tips and cautions in bang-boxes for those who want extra detail or tips. He goes into detail about how the risks are over-villified and how the benefits are under-appreciated, which options he prefers and why, as well as how to monitor and control any side-effects, such as high red-cell count, in order to optimize health. You can tell Jay invested an enormous amount of time in this product. This book looks like it was illustrated and edited by a major publishing house; I had text books in college that looked less professional than this!I don't have much in the way of criticisms. Ways to find a good, affordable, local TRT doc (or to talk to your primary doc) would be nice, but are somewhat outside of the scope and highly variable; he also recommends a tele-medicine clinic on his page. I'd like to learn more about HCG monotherapy, which he recommends you pursue first, but that's not exactly TRT so also somewhat outside of the scope (and the Q&A at the end suggests he may've added additional info on this in the final draft). I'm also interested in information about whether TRT will permanently effect my ability to naturally produce T after long term use (say, your natural level drops from 400 to 275 after stopping TRT). I spoke to Jay about this on the phone and he feels it is pointless to worry about as you wouldn't go on TRT to begin with if your natural levels weren't already making you miserable, so there's never a point in stopping. Fair point, but s*** happens and I'm still interested in learning more about long-term effects.Overall, I highly recommend this book. It's concise, professional, detailed and still easy for a layman to read. Had I discovered it sooner I could've saved myself dozens of hours of scouring the internet. $20 to save all that time and confusion is a bargain. Five stars.

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful. This is THE Definitive Testosterone Replacement Information Resource! By Calvin P. Poole, Jr. This book is well written and fact filled. It gives suggestion and recommendations for testosterone replacement therapy that are excellent. It does not go into the scientific portion with relatively useless information, such as drawings of the hormones, the number of methyl groups, etc. If the advice in this book is used, I can almost promise that you will feel better and make many more advances in your appearance, your mood and, in general, how you face the world and live life.That being said and hopefully you will considering buying this book, I am going into my background. I am a doctor and a board-certified Ob-Gyn. I am studying to become certified in anti-aging medicine at this time. When I finished residency in 1984, a large part of our knowledge base was endocrinology, especially in relationship to the sexual hormones including testosterone as well as estrogen and progesterone, which people usually consider the female hormones. For example, did you know that the usual post menopausal woman, say of sixty three will have a higher testosterone than her husband of the same age?Your testosterone starts falling about 1% a year on the average starting at age 30 (ages of peak testosterone vary from source to source from 20-30). If you have had a high testosterone level and it drops to a much lower level, you can become symptomatic, even though your tests will show a low normal testosterone level. This is not an all or none situation. Do you really think that if your level is say 275 and the cut off for a low level is 270 that you do not would not benefit from therapy until your level gets to 269? Each lab is different and the one I just checked for a normal range is 270-1070.I became depressed when I hit about 40 and after several years of being on SSRI's, and gaining weight (read getting fat) and not having the urge to work out or actually do anything, gaining about 70 pounds with a decrease in muscle mass, (so who knows how much fat I really put on) I continued to research since I got NO results from the medications or therapy. I found an old medical paper that said that testosterone therapy was effective in the treatment of depression in older males. I then found a paper that gave a comparison and it showed that testosterone therapy was much more effective than SSRI's. I got my levels done and I had a very low level of testosterone. I started replacement therapy and have lost weight and no longer have problems with depression.Now back to the book. Most MD's do not like to start testosterone replacement therapy, since that is "part of getting old". This was a NoNo, even in the 70's. I do not agree with this since your quality of life suffers and you are miserable. Some worry that TRT can cause heart attacks or strokes. There was one flawed study that showed this, whereas there are many studies that show the exact opposite.If you are considering replacement therapy get this book and get a copy for your doctor, because this has more practical advice in it for TRT. After my training and back ground, I personally like to know the chemical make up of the hormones and the degradation, etc., but most do not.Jay is very knowledgeable in the area of TRT. I have not found any mistakes in the information that he presents. I have never met him, although I have communicated with him online. I was surprised at his grasp of TRT which is much deeper than most doctors that I have talked with and after discussions with him, I have made changes in my own TRT and have benefited from them. I highly recommend this book both for men interested in TRT as well as all doctors that treat adult and elderly males.In full disclosure, I did receive a copy of this prior to publication, free of charge, and did not receive any thing in return for my review. I have nothing to gain or lose from this review and don't even know Mr. Campbell. If I had not thought so highly of this book, I would have stated it or not reviewed it at all.In order to "put my money where my mouth is" I did purchase this to give to my own doctor. I just needed to explain how I was able to get a review out as quickly as I did on the day of release.

I felt like a completely different person By Jeremy After serving in the 75th Ranger Regiment for a number of years and going through a few of the toughest schools the military has to offer; I felt like a completely different person. The rigor to succeed that I had before was gone. My competitive edge started to go away. I was known as one of the more physically fit members in my unit and it was all just going away. Even weirder was the fact that I didn't really care. I was now becoming ok with not being the best. I knew after Ranger School It would take awhile for my body to heal up. After all, I recycled mountain phase twice and was there for almost half a year (got caught in best ranger comp). I graduated and returned to things as normal assuming after a few months everything would start to become normal. But it was the last straw for my body. After deploying and being around so many blasts, Ranger School seemed to be the last straw the broke my body. After reading the information in this book and arguing with every doctor ever since they all told me "I was too young to have that problem", and 6 months after graduating I finally get my testosterone checked. It came back at 26ng/dl. I was 23 years old at the time. It explained the complete change in who I was and the fact that I couldn't even get a hard on. AT 23 YEARS OLD.I followed recommendations as outlined in the book and talked to my doctor about TRT. He was hesitant at first. Saying that it must have been a fluke cause of my age and had more tests done including brain scans. But I stuck with the amazing information this book informs you with and worked with my doctor to bring my levels up to where they should be. I brought the information from this book to my doctor, which luckily he was open to trying, saying he even learned some things (Most doctors ego's are too big to ever admit they learned from someone who doesn't have letters after their name). That proved for me that Jay really knows what he's talking about. Without the knowledge I got from Jay and his book I would have never been able to return to who I was.I've seen it happen to so many of my friends from serving and now can show them the same information that literally GAVE ME BACK MY LIFE. I have since gotten out of the military and continue to use this book as an on-going reference to how to optimize my hormones and my life.All I can really say is thanks to this book, THE REAL ME IS BACK

I love the characters that fit in with a northern California coastal town. Much like my favorite mystery/crime authors such as Susan Dunlap and her " Jill Smith Series", as well as Sue Grafton's character Kinsey Millhone; the herione in this "Psychic Eye Mystery" is following the genre of female heriones who face challenges and succeed. Suza Lambert Bowser's character, Celeste Newhaven is a perfect addition to these brave, funny and intelligent women. A wonderful book to read by a cozy fire. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series. Plus: what a great title!

By Cole A very likeable and emotionally complex heroine is at the center of this intriguing tale, accompanied by a group of equally likeable supporting characters. This is definitely an entertaining read, full of mystery and suspense. I'm looking forward to Celeste Newhaven's next adventure.

The dieting industry makes it seem like losing weight is some sort of rocket science, a top secret combination of special foods eaten in special ways and all kinds of expensive superfoods, fitness fads and embarrassing celebrity endorsements. And so I guess it’s understandable that when someone seems to stay slender, it must obviously be because they’re just naturally that way. By accident, even. We assume some special innate characteristics mean they get to run circles around the laws of physics, eat junk food and end up with flat abs and a bum you can bounce coins off. The truth, though? Nobody is naturally thin. In fact, when somebody claims to be naturally one way or the other (naturally slim or just naturally bigger, without anything they can do about it) what they are actually telling you is that they have a lifestyle that naturally leads to either a healthy weight or overweight. Nobody can fight the laws of physics, but people are born with different temperaments, different life philosophies, and different attitudes towards food. Look at a thin person, and what’s likely the cause is that they think about food differently, and because they do, they behave differently when they eat. As with so many things in life, your attitude determines everything. What is your attitude to food? Are you carrying around ideas, thoughts, feelings, misconceptions, biases, illusions and wishful thinking that is actually making you collect extra pounds? Or do you hold a mindset about food that allows you to make rational choices that result in a stable, healthy weight? If you’re like me, it’s a mix of both! By Jeriel Josue When I started reading this book, my first thought was that it was very entertaining, but I didn't really think I would use the information... just enjoy it. I'm about halfway through a successful weight loss journey of my own, and I'm not about to change from what is already working for me.However, in the course of reading the book and in the days since then, I have found myself making substantially better food choices than I have in the past. I've given much more thought to what should/shouldn't go together in the same meal. In addition, I've been much more aware of balancing one meal against another throughout the day. And perhaps most of all, I'm finding it much easier to remind myself of proper food portions and to avoid old habits that caused me to gain weight.I'm really amazed at how much this book has helped me. I think that once I start maintenance at my goal weight, I will reread the book and put even more of the rules into play. This is a keeper.

So many overweight people have a bad attitude and bad habits when it comes to food. I see people walking on the street eating a burrito, a bag of chips, drinking a big cup of cola, and they are usually overweight. I see people who drink several cans of diet soda every day, and they are usually overweight. It's weird how there are so many overweight people in America. Another thing I noticed is that there is always a line at the McDonalds drive through, and almost all the restaurants these days are franchises like Subway, Olive Garden, Applebees and Panda Express. All of these things show that so many people have a horrible attitude and bad habits toward food. I like the common sense attitude toward food that this book presents. It mainly says to calm down and have a healthy attitude toward food.

It is in the way you eat, the foods you eat and discipline you give to your lifestyle. The book has these 7 eating habits that those naturally thin people have. I am so interested to know all these eating habits because I want to know the secret of those who have gifted bodies. One thing people should put in mind is that don't eat snacks all the time. Snacks are really delicious and sometimes can create this mind set as 'just a small amount of sweets for snacks'. When these sweets happened constantly then it will just give you lots of sugar in your body and make you obese. This is so nice and helpful. Highly recommended read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Must have for your cabin by the lake! By jpcooper Lake Tahoe is truly one of the most breathtaking sites on the face of the earth. It is only natural that writers would attempt to convey some sense of that majesty between the covers of a book. This most recent coffee-table pictorial is no exception. This book is not your standard contemporary collection of photography but rather a chronicle of the history of the area as seen through the eyes of the artists who’ve tried to capture that beauty. There are plenty of photographic images to be sure, but they are mostly vintage views that help the reader get some sense of the Lake’s history.The paintings and woodcuts that were selected for this volume were well chosen and are as good a collection as one is likely to find in any book on the subject. The obligatory examples of more contemporary art at the tail end are not nearly as impressive but fortunately don’t take up too many of the book's pages.I can’t really comment on the text in its entirety as I have yet to read the book from cover to cover. And as the text is a secondary consideration in pictorial books I am just commenting on my first impressions after a cursory read. That being said, what I have read seems to be well informed and of benefit to the illustrations.This volume is well produced and the images are all perfectly clear. All the elements are there to offer any reader an enjoyable viewing experience. For anyone living in the Tahoe region or those who may have a vacation residence in the vicinity this would make an excellent addition to that stack on your coffee-table.My only criticism is the amount of attention devoted to the region’s Indian basketry. Over a hundred pages of the book are devoted to this subject. The baskets Ms. Wolfe has chosen to highlight are no doubt exceptional but it doesn’t seem, at least in this reviewer's opinion, to fit the book’s principle theme. There is ample enough material there to have produced a separate book. And for those whose interest is the lake alone, they would probably have preferred it handled in that fashion.I don’t want to knock off a full star for the above complaint but I think it should be noted none the less. Overall, I think this a book anyone with an interest in Tahoe would appreciate and should offer many hours of enjoyment. And if in addition to a love of the lake you are passionate about basketry you will have really hit the jackpot!

From Publishers Weekly Israeli author Watzman (Company C) ambitiously takes on the whole of geological and human history as they developed in the Rift Valley, the defining geographical feature between Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian West Bank. Though he occasionally drops too much information too quickly, Watzman is a talented storyteller, deftly engaging readers interested in the Earth's constant evolution, along with those more likely to be interested in the humanity affected by it. With a nice sense of irony and the absurd, the American-born Watzman makes a lively tale out of his travels in the valley, lending a practiced ear to experts and plain folks alike. Yet there are important gaps. Though he clearly wants to do justice to all the rift's stories, frequently referring to his belief that "people see the same landscape differently depending on who they are," Watzman fails almost utterly to bring in non-Jewish voices; the one Arab we meet is an Israeli Bedouin. He is also inconsistent in his references to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, mentioning Palestinian violence frequently, but largely ignoring Israeli military operations and the ongoing occupation of Palestinian lands. Though this is a thoroughly enjoyable read, readers won't get a fully rounded version of the tale Watzman attempts to tell. But when we look at it, we don't see the physical object. We see stories and ideas and our own histories. People see the same landscape differently depending on who they are, when they live, what they've done, and what stories they heard when they were children."Being congenitally predisposed to this unique and magnificent part of the physical world, I can attest to this pronouncement made by Haim Watzman in his majestic tale of a journey up the Jordan Rift Valley, "a crack in the earth's crust that begins where the Indian Ocean's waters mix with those of the Gulf of Aden." Watzman focuses on the stretch of the rift from the northern shore of the Dead Sea at Eilat to the Golan Heights bordering Syria in his riveting new book, "A Crack in the Earth".Through a blend of science and faith, Watzman has crafted a story that tells about geological phenomena, scientific analysis, archeological examination, and philosophical musings through the distinct perspectives of biologists, zoologists, kibbutzniks, and other ordinary, modern-day inhabitants of the rift. Watzman, who is himself religiously observant, points out that he is also a journalist and a man of science, making him naturally skeptical. He challenges accepted biblical verities with the same investigative rigor that he uses when scrutinizing geological and biological ones. He notes that "modern archaeology and textual scholarship have cast doubt on the historical truth of the Bible for decades now...in many ways modern Orthodox Judaism is not a religion of the Bible. It's much more a religion built by the sages upon the foundation of the Bible, after the destruction of the Temple and the rise of Christianity." In the same way that the rift valley is the physical foundation upon which people have superimposed their `stories, ideas and histories,' the bible is the textual foundation which Judaism in its modern application builds upon, using human constructionists in the form of the sages of the rabbinic period.Ultimately, it is the people who have inhabited the sacred lands of the rift that have kept it so fertile in our imaginations. From the Israelites crossing into the Promised Land from Egypt to Jesus being baptized by John in the waters of the Jordan, all the way up to modern Zionists like Rachel the Poetess; these are the stories of the people that fascinate Watzman, and his infectious love of the land and its people enraptures us as well.Watzman, who is something of an anomaly in Israel as a religiously observant Jew with leftist leanings, largely refrains from politics in this book. Occasionally though, he does weave some political context into his narrative, explaining why, for example, Jericho became off limits to Israelis after the outbreak of the second Intifada. Watzman draws parallels to the turbulent landscape (Tiberias has experienced severe earthquakes almost once a century since the beginning of the Common Era) with the incessant political and social turmoil. He ruefully observes that "to an Israeli living in the first years of the 21st century, turmoil seems to be the rule. Periods of equilibrium seem few, far off, and short-lived." Yet, in geological terms, the ebbs and flows are much slower and deliberate. Some of the rocks on both sides of the rift are between 570 million and one billion years old. In that context, humankind's effect on the region is insignificant. God, who is unchanging, watches bemusedly over it all.Perhaps not surprisingly, some have already criticized Watzman for not incorporating more of a Palestinian, Arab voice. John Leonard, in Harper's Magazine (June edition) somehow manages, through a tortured interpretation, to read into Watzman "his homeland's hateful modern indulgence of Bronze Age identity politics." Leonard continues with his knee-jerk critique. "He has a hard time even talking to a Palestinian, as if Palestinians were remnants of some antediluvian proto-species prior to language." Or Publishers Weekly, noting that "Watzman fails almost utterly to bring in non-Jewish voices; the one Arab we meet is an Israeli Bedouin."Both critiques conveniently leave out the poignant encounter Watzman has with a Palestinian at a West Bank gas station at the end of the book, where he risks his own physical safety to preserve his moral bearings and psychic equilibrium. For those of us who know Haim Watzman and what he stands for, the irony would be hilarious if it weren't so deadly. Even in a book that is so decidedly apolitical, by an Israeli Jew who has been so vocal in his criticisms of his country's treatment of Palestinians, critics of Israel can't help but find racism and xenophobia under any and every rock.But Haim Watzman is if anything, the ultimate mensch. The last section of his book, in which he has a very real encounter with a very real Palestinian, attests to his own very real humanity, and bravery for his beliefs (unlike some Western intellectuals who `shoot first' from the safety of their ivory towers and do their homework later, if ever) . Just before he turns back to "meet the Palestinian halfway" and offer him a ride, he muses that "since humans first began to call the names of gods, they have created their own valley of prayers, desires, deeds, and choices, which overlay the landscape just as the rain clouds do. As hard as we try to comprehend the landscape itself, it is humanity that we find."This is a beautiful book that radiates a personal warmth and love of the land and its people. It is as uplifting as it is inspired.[...]

More Politics and Personal Memories than Geology By DHB The author is a good writer and his descriptions are interesting but the book is not very much about the geology or the archeology of the Jordan Rift Valley. In writing about about places, he gives us more of his on reminiscences than anything else. When writing about geologists he seems more interested in their personal lives than their work.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Alongside the Divide By L. King Chaim Waitzman is a professional translator and I've greatly admired some of his other work. This is his 2nd solo effort. As an occasional hiker and paddler I enjoy trying out different routes not just for the exercise and comradery but also for gaining an understanding of the history and geography of the land. Waitzman takes us on a journey along the continental rift between Africa and Arabia, starting from Eilat and ranging as far north as the Bekka Valley in Lebanon which the map on the opening page shows quite vividly in high relief. He's a journalist as well, and along the way he interviews a number of interesting professionals who've studied the geology and ecology of the rift and presents their theories and observations.The book is divided into 3 sections, each with it's own map which I found quite useful in placing the narrative. IMV the first covering the lower Negev and third discussing the upper Galilee are strongest. We're treated to a variety of scientists describing what the area was during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras, and whether or not the rift is a transform fault like the San Adreas or a graben - a stretching of the Earth between two other faults. We meet Uzi Avner, and archeologists who specializes in ancient desert cultures and has some interesting extrapolations based on stone structures that he has found. Later on this motif resurfaces in the "cheirograph legend" which I learned as a child, where Adam and Eve, afraid of the dark following the first sunset are deceived by Satan to swear allegiance to him on a stone that is hidden in the Jordan. Further north Dr. Naama Goren-Inbar studies artifacts related to the Acheulean stone age culture who emerged from Africa some 1.6 million years ago and lived along the upper Jordan 800,000 years ago for a period of at least 1/2 million years, possibly double that. There is a wonderful description of Dr. Amotz Zahavi's work in evolutionary biology where he studies communication through behaviour of Arabian babbler birds. His theories present an interesting explanation of altruism as well as explaining the puzzle of why the unwieldy tail of the male peacock which would seem to work against Darwinian survival. The intriguing speculation is that the large tale informs females that his offspring offers a better chance of survival because his other abilities are able to overcome the handicap of the tail! The journalist and the scientist then extrapolate this to human behaviour, altruism and risk taking on behalf of others as performing a similar function.Nor is history neglected. There's a nice tie in between North and South with a look at the establishment of a Crusader outpost by Renaud of Châtillon where Aqaba and Eilat now stand, demanding tribute and interrupting Arab trade routes, just as the Arabs did before them. Renaud's decision to move on Mecca is credited with Saladin's decision to counter attack, drawing out Frankish King Guy's forces from Jerusalem by attacking Tiveria (against the advice of Raymond the III of Tripoli), resulting in a route of the Crusader's forces at Hittin just outside the city. To date there has been no archeological confirmation of the written accounts, but they're still looking. .Another thing I liked about the book is that it avoided using the rift as a heavy handed metaphor for the Arab/Israeli conflict. True, politics appear in the background as the book was written during the discussions of Israel's withdrawal from Gaza, but the metaphor of a geographic fault is more often applied to the many differences of interpretation between between scientists - up close the ruptures might seem highly significant, yet they are also part of a structure of disagreement that holds everything together.The book also contains interesting speculations on the Dead Sea Scrolls, the reconstitution of the Sanhedrin in Tiveria after the Roman sack of Jerusalem, the fit of Biblical stories into the landscape, changes in the kibbutz movement as well as localized cooperation between Jordanian and Israeli chemical factories in the area of the Dead Sea.The writing is both smooth and interesting.Recommended.

About the Author Drs. Micheál Houlahan and Philip Tacka are co-authors of: Kodály Today: A Cognitive Approach to Elementary MMusicusic Education and From Sound to Symbol: Fundamentals of Music published by Oxford University Press, the Sound Thinking Series published by Boosey & Hawkes including Music for Sight-Singing and Ear Training Volumes I & II and Sound Thinking: Developing Musical Literacy Volumes I & II, Zoltán Kodály: A Guide to Research (Garland Publishing Inc.), and numerous articles published both here and abroad. Both have presented papers both nationally and internationally on aspects of music theory, music history and Kodály studies and perception and cognition. If you teach elementary music and want to do so effectively, you should probably purchase this entire series right away. It's incredible! The best part is that each book contains a year worth of units divided into sequential lessons and with specific repertoire (though there is plenty of flexibility if you want to use other repertoire for some parts of lessons). Even if your kids aren't caught up to the sequence (my 5th graders are currently on 2nd grade concepts), the lessons work and are adaptable to your students, your equipment, your classroom, your administration, and your overall situation. These books are an amazing resource for elementary music teacher and something that the elementary music world has been lacking for much too long. The lessons can also serve as an outline that can be supplemented with other activities (concert prep, Orff activities, instrumental performance, etc).
