In the tradition of The Sense of Wonder by Rachel Carson and On the Loose by Terry and Renny Russell, Earth & Eros combines words and photographs to inspire readers to deepen their connection with the good Earth. The book awakens readers to the full force of eros life force that connects us to our bodies, other humans, all living beings, and the Earth as a living being.Intended as an antidote to an age obsessed by speed, screens, and machines, this book brings together previously published prose and poetry with 25 fine art landscape photographs to explore the sacred erotic dimension of humans’ relationship to the Earth. The writings in Earth & Eros were chosen for their brevity, readability, beauty, and potency, and the photographs for their sensuality. Readers engage with writers such as David James Duncan, Hart Crane, Diane Ackerman, Sherman Alexie, D. H. Lawrence, Mary Oliver, and Pablo Neruda. Some of the pieces of writing are explicitly sexual, while others appreciate the sensuality of tree limbs, seeping water, mushrooms, and ferns. Earth and Eros is beautifully produced and a pleasure to hold and to look at, a book to read and reread slowly, out loud.

A beautiful compilation of words and images By JTownsend This is a beautiful, timely book, one that shares an important message but is also just lovely to look at and read. Bruce Hodge's photographs are stunning and original, and Lorraine Anderson has selected the perfect poems to pair with them, from such varied poets as Stafford, Neruda, Whitman, Kinnell, May, Levertov, and others less known to me. I really have never seen a book quite like this, with a focus on the deep and sensual pleasure the earth brings us. As Lorraine Anderson puts it in her preface, the book calls us "to recognize the deep, freely available wellspring of pleasure, satisfaction, and fullness we an drink from whenever we choose to pay attention." I'll be giving this book to several friends and loved ones this season. A real gem!

By Gaye Abbott This is a book that I keep for my morning meditation and reading time.....or when I simply have forgotten what sensual beauty the Earth imparts to every living being in each moment. When modern life dulls the senses all one has to do is read a page, or even a few lines, of this book to return to the erotic pull of each breath gifted to us by the artistry of life that dances around and within us.....

It works for me on many levels: the poems and passages Anderson has chosen are exquisite--music to my ears (suitable for reading aloud), and most of them new to me; the words are enhanced by nearby relevant (and beautiful) photos; and anyone not deeply moved/stirred by the result must not have a pulse! The production quality is high: thick, glossy paper and very readable print. It’s a great gift book but also bears up well under rereading as part of one’s own library (especially that pile of books next to the bed ;-).
