This book is about my son’s onset of autism and my family’s journey to heal him. My mission in writing this book is to share a powerful message with the world. My message is this: Wake up, people. Autism is just one of a thousand debilitating and heartbreaking illnesses that our children are being diagnosed with today, and it is our own fault. After my son, Aaron, was diagnosed with autism at age three, I have had to travel an expensive and painful road that proves without a doubt that autism is not only treatable, but also preventable. I know that statement might make many people angry, but I do not have time to care about that. I have one life to live and I am going to make it the best life I can. That means being willing to take responsibility for my mistakes, regardless of blame. My children are the most important things in the world to me, and I intend to teach them something while I have time on this earth. I wrote this book to show them through my living example the importance of life. Life is precious. Life is a gift. But what happens when we start compromising the quality of our children’s lives before they even get a chance to live one? That is not a future I want to perpetuate. Instead, I offer my story and my experience as a lesson in autism recovery and prevention to anyone who is open and willing to learn. It is simple. Five aspects of autism recovery and prevention need to be honored in order to reverse our sad trajectory. They are lifestyle, diet, nutrition, environment, and mental outlook. Living a life that uses these principles is absolutely the best protection for the children of the future and they are the foundation of a truly effective autism recovery model.

I don't have a child with autism but both my children have skin allergies and my son has a peanut allergy. While I read this book expecting to hear about one's family struggle to help their child recover from autism, I wasn't expecting to learn about the gut and nutrition and how that might affect my own children. I believe Patrisha's perspective that the medical community is not necessarily interested in healing. I will look into the GAPS diet to see how that might improve my children's allergies. I also enjoyed Patrisha's single-minded devotion to healing her child and her ability to let rational thought and her own observations guide her choices. Her story is inspirational and I wish her and her family continued healing. I have no doubt that she will accomplish all that she sets her mind to.

It pisses me off in some aspects. To claim that there is a 'cure' for autism and that she cured her son and yet she states he still deals with issues. So he is not cured, he is greatly improved, which is wonderful. But lets stop short of using the term 'cured', because quite frankly I think she is fooling herself in that respect. In my own experience it appears there are two camps when it comes to the 'onset' of autism if you will. There are those parents like the author who feel it came about suddenly in a child who was developing somewhat normally, and then there are those like myself who feel it was already present at birth. There are chromosome abnormalities in kids with autism, which means to me that they are in fact born with it?? But I digress. I do feel very strongly that there is a gut connection with autism. I do feel strongly that the medical community is so lacking when it comes to this side of things, and parents like me trying to figure out how to help their child are left trying to figure it out on their own, usually without any degrees/education. It's frustrating as hell. Mosty, I come to look for answers and to learn more about the gut connection because of the digestive issues and because my son gets sick so often. IF his autism symptoms improve and it gets easier for him to function in life, that would be wonderful. However, that's not why I am trying to research the nutrition aspect of this- my motivation for that is purely to help his digestion and immune system. Actually, my son has already come a long way, and I see improvement and growth on a daily basis. I think getting away from regular antibiotic use ( he had tubes put in and it stopped all the infections), and getting him on DHA/fish oil and probiotics has helped a lot too. So, ultimately there were a lot of things in this book that made sense, caused the lightbulb to go off, and other things that made me angry and still more things that I think are flat out wrong. So for me, it's worth the read, but don't let this book be the end all- keep doing your research. Now I am off to read Gut and Psychology Syndrome: Natural Treatment for Autism, Dyspraxia, A.D.D., Dyslexia, A.D.H.D., Depression, Schizophrenia

By Amazon Customer This book is well written; not preachy or condisending. The author doesn't claim to know everything about everything and writes in a way that lets readers reach a lot of their own conclusions. A lot of great information is provided along with citations to well known research and other sources of information. I do not have a child with autism, but I am glad I read this book because I certainly feel more informed. With so many kids being diagnosed with autism, I feel better being a bit more knowledgable. I also liked that the author gave a recount of her personal journey -next time I meet a family with an autistic child I will certainly be able to better understand their struggles.
