I don't sew much anymore, but I wear a fair amount of vintage clothing, mostly late 40s and early 50s. I often do my hair in a 40s style as well, although I'm not hard core enough to do full-on Victory rolls. (I teach, and I feel the rolls are pushing it a bit.)If you're looking for thorough directions on getting 40s hair and makeup "right," this book is only going to be a starter for you. The books by Lauren Rennells are better for that. (I don't know the other books in the _Style Me Vintage_ series to give my opinion on them.)That being said, where this _Style Me Vintage_ book wins me over is in the research of fashion of the era. I really appreciate its review of different national styles, kinds of shoes, women's military dress, jewelry, rationing, and how they're connected to the surrounding culture. The pictures are beautiful, and come from period photographs, modern photographs of vintage clothing, and advertisement and film of the 40s. Tregenza also gives tips on identifying clothing of the era (fabric content, pattern, construction) and finding modern reproductions or compatible silhouettes. And again, the photos are immeasurably helpful. However, if you don't have as much familiarity with clothing construction as I do, the photos might not feel informative enough, and you may be left wanting for more text explanations.I didn't learn much from the hair and makeup sections, but the rest of the book more than makes up for it, and for that I give it five stars. A valuable addition to my library, thank you.

Many photographs and advertisements are used as well as personal historical images from the author. Although not comprehensive, the British-oriented book does go into American and Parisian styles as well. An appendix gives locations and resources for tracking down vintage clothing and items. The book breaks down as follows: Make up, Hair, Wartime Fashion, Post War Fashion, It's All In The Detail, Lingerie and Swimwear, Weddings, Researching the 1940s, Top Tips, Shopping. The Shopping section includes stores that sell originals, rentals, reproductions, jewellery, and shoes. The book is very clean, with more graphics than text. In addition to the style tips, a bit of history helps to understand the foundation of the 1940s - from austerity and L-85 rationing, scarcity of metals for things like paper clips, even the regulatory limitations on how long a hem could be or how many pockets on a dress. As well, everything from knits to hats, military uniforms, how to spot vintage items, is covered in brief. The how-to sections are short but do include step by step photos (if not very robust text descriptions). E.g., there are only three types of hair styles (rolls, braids, waves) but we get images throughout the process of creating them. For the make up tutorials, the only clue you'll get on what to do on eyes is that "more coloured eyeshadows were used in the late 40s, especially blues, greys and greens". We don't get any information on how to apply, just a finished image. I'd have loved to know which products, by brand names, were used here and the technique of applying which color where. So while the book definitely covers the breadth of the 1940s, I did some how feel that it was a shallow approach. Just enough to get you started but ultimately not necessarily enough to complete the look. As a portrait photographer, I tried the directions on one of my models was only marginally achieved the look. Perhaps if the author had worked with novices and seen how it can go wrong or listened to questions they asked while using the book, she could have added much needed information. In all, despite the light approach of the topic, I did enjoy the book. it is a quick 30 minute read with many images. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

An Interesting Read with Pictures and Tutorials By Rebecca Haden This book has step by step instructions for make up and hairstyles from the '40s as well as for those who want to shop for vintage clothing or reproductions. If you want a '40s style for a play or a party or just for fun, this book will help you recreate the look. There are plenty of photos and I enjoyed seeing both the 1940s shots of the author's relatives and the retro style makeovers of modern women. But the part I enjoyed most was the history of wartime fashion. More than the fashions themselves, the books focuses on the lives of women in the U.S. and Europe, how they managed to dress stylishly in spite of the strictures on their shopping, and what their governments had to say about it. From the propaganda that tried to guide the clothing choices of women in Nazi Germany to the contrast between the rationing and austerity schemes in England and among the chic mademoiselles of Paris, there is just enough historical detail. You'll end up understanding how history influenced clothing design, without getting bogged down.Lingerie, swimsuits, hats, jewelry, and shoes are all included. There is a lengthy section at the back of the book with resources, including blogs.
