Why Gary Neal Hansen’s Christmas Play? Your church wants to put on a pageant this December. You want more than kids as shepherds in bathrobes and tinsel-winged angels. Sure, they’re cute, but you want your congregation to know why the baby Jesus matters. You want to show the real meaning of Christmas: the story of the coming of Christ into the world, Jesus born of Mary, the Son of God. It is easy to go wrong in a play about Christmas. In a heartbeat things can get too sweet, or too preachy, or downright tacky. Despite the best of intentions, plays can even take our attention away from Jesus. Focusing too hard on modern problems like materialism, they can almost forget to show the world-changing story of the coming of Christ. So you fear that your play will aim too low. You fear missing the once-a-year opportunity to help people see and feel the story of how our salvation began to be revealed. Gary Neal Hansen’s Christmas Play tells the whole biblical story of the coming of Jesus in the Bible’s own words. It weaves all the relevant Gospel passages into one seamless drama. This is the story of the Light coming into a world of shadows -- the Light that darkness can never overcome. Gary Neal Hansen is the award-winning author of Kneeling with Giants: Learning to Pray with History’s Best Teachers (InterVarsity, 2012), and Love Your Bible: Finding Your Way to the Presence of God with a 12th Century Monk (Climacus, 2015). The Big Picture By Amazon Customer If you’re looking for a Christmas play with depth and breadth, its roots planted deep in scripture, you may have found it.Gary Neal Hansen has stretched the boundaries of the traditional pageant, drawing together a variety of New Testament texts and weaving them together to create a harmonious narrative about the coming of Christ. Here are some of the things that stand out about this play:It is biblical.Every word in the play—including the part of the narrator—comes from the New Testament. Gary has chosen the English Standard Version for its dignity and poetry. Although the language is quite formal, it does highlight the beautiful hymns of Luke’s Infancy narrative (the Magnificat, Benedictus, and Nunc Dimittis) which rarely appear in Christmas pageants. I also love that the gospel of John—usually ignored because it does not narrate the birth of Jesus—provides the framework for the whole piece, carrying us from the beginning of all things to the mystery of the incarnation, leaving us to ponder how Christ is present with us now.It is flexible. Most of the speaking parts are done radio-play or readers’ theatre style, with the actors on chairs, reading their parts into a microphone. However, there is plenty of opportunity to flesh out certain scenes with additional actors, sets and costumes, so you won’t have to give up the adorable little sheep and shepherds in bathrobes. It is intergenerational.I love that this play includes characters often omitted from Christmas pageants. Zechariah, Elizabeth, Simeon, Anna, John the Baptist and King Herod all make an appearance alongside Mary, Joseph, Jesus, the shepherds and the magi. Not only does this reflect the biblical narrative more fully, it also creates an opportunity for a truly intergenerational cast to take on the roles of characters both young and old.A few words of warning: the English Standard Version does not use inclusive language, so some directors may wish to make a few editorial changes. Also, the play includes a reference to the massacre of the innocents (the killing of infant boys in Bethlehem at the command of King Herod). While this is presented with sensitivity, and is important to the narrative (it highlights the peril that drives the holy family into Egypt), it may be disturbing to some young children. In his introduction the author notes that harmonizing the different gospel accounts mutes the differences between them (something biblical scholarship takes pains to emphasize). However, he suggests, interweaving the accounts, “reflects the way Christians have remembered these stories down through the centuries.” Sometimes harmonizing different texts produces something truly beautiful. Just ask G.F. Handel. This review is based upon a complimentary copy of the play provided to the reviewer.

By TMS Biblically faithful and harmoniously arranged in a coherent, logical sequence, this simple adaptation of nativity and incarnation texts from three Gospels (Matthew, Luke, and John) assigns the words of Scripture in a fresh way to various voices and characters. Thus, e.g., we have Herod growling that the darkness not has been able to overcome the light. Wonderful! With this creative approach, Hansen invites congregations to read and hear anew the canonical account of Christ's first advent in a way that will strengthen faith, inspire worship, and provoke delight. Thank you for doing this, Gary. Good for you! And good for the church that performs Christmas Play!

Elegant, Powerful, Accessible, Biblical By Bradley Keyes I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author on the condition that I post an honest review. The four words above are the ones that come most readily to mind after having read this wonderful work. On a first read, one might well think, "What's the big deal? Everything's just copied from Scripture." This is true -- and yet, the gentle, faithful and nuanced way that Hansen has assembled it truly brings the Christmas Story to life in a unique fashion.Elegant -- because the entire script is from the Bible (which is much more concise than most of what's written today), but also because of the thoughtful ways Hansen assigns readings to various characters. Simplicity also comes to mind here. This production clearly highlights the Story (as opposed to stagecraft or acting, e.g.), and the author adds a minimum of direction that, because of its infrequent use, is all the more effective in communicating to the audience.Powerful -- As I read the play and imagine various people reading the parts aloud, the power of this re-telling quickly becomes clear. The entire story is read, but not just by one person. Nor is it shared by a succession of people walking up to the lectern, reading a passage, then leaving to let the next person have their turn. The use of people on a stage to give voice to the actual people in the Story, with minimalist staging, provides a more organic setting for the telling of the Story, one that allows the voices and the narrative to come forth in a uniquely powerful and faithful way. Furthermore, the Christmas Story IS a powerful story in and of itself; where we so often fail is in trying to modify it in some way as to add something that we think is missing, or needs to be emphasized. This production humbly (and refreshingly) refrains from this tack. As a consequence, the audience gets the "original, unedited, unadulterated" story all by itself -- and this allows the Story to fully express its authentic power.Accessible -- Both practically and intellectually. Again, because Hansen has added nothing, one can assume that most people in the audience have already heard most, if not all, of these words before. Neither the audience nor the readers are asked to examine or explore a (possibly disorienting) new "twist" or interpretation. The familiarity and simplicity of the narrative allow the audience to enter into the story with a minimum of preparation. Even for those who have never heard the story, the unadorned biblical narrative is quite simple and free of the distracting "fluff" that is added to so much of what we read and hear today. Practically, this production does not ask from the readers the kinds of theatrical talent that most stage productions do. Any church or faith group, no matter how small, could produce this play, and with far less rehearsal time and stage production that other dramatizations may require.Biblical -- This is probably the production's greatest strength. It uses the English Standard Version (ESV) translation, a relatively new translation, yet one that seeks to be more faithful to the original Greek and Hebrew than many other contemporary translations that attempt to make the scripture more "relevant" or "understandable." I personally think this translation has the least potential for raising concerns (or eyebrows) among any congregation, regardless of their theological bent. And as I wrote above, Hansen has added nothing in the way of his own words or explanations, but rather allows the scripture to stand on its own.In sum, this is a faithful telling of the Christmas Story that allows the powerful Biblical witness to stand on its own. It provides a minimum of voicing and stage direction that, although spare (or perhaps because it is spare), lifts the story out from the lips of a solitary reader or narrator and allows both the readers and the audience to see and hear this event in a way that is fresh, yet never novel. Hansen is to be commended for his gentle, respectful, nuanced and masterful stewardship of this precious and life-giving Story.
