Ancient Society, by Lewis Henry Morgan

Review "This book, first published in 1877, is believed to be the first modern inquiry into social evolution. Receiving much attention from Karl Marx and Frederick Engels, Ancient Society made a great impact on historians of the last century and influenced general anthropology."—Lore and Language (England)

From the Inside Flap Lewis Henry Morgan studied the American Indian way of life and collected an enormous amount of factual material on the history of primitive-communal society. All the conclusions he draws are based on these facts; where he lacks them, he reasons back on the basis of the data available to him. He determined the periodization of primitive society by linking each of the periods with the development of production techniques. The agreat sequence of inventions and discoveries;a and the history of institutions, with each of its three branches a family, property and government a constitute the progress made by human society from its earliest stages to the beginning of civilization. Mankind gained this progress through 'the gradual evolution of their mental and moral powers through experience, and of their protracted struggle with opposing obstacles while winning their way to civilization.'

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Has the modern look and feel of outlook about what can be known about ancient manners and morals. By maurice Morgan began his researches in anthropology out of a practical necessity. He served as legal counselto the Seneca nation on matters pertaining to land tenure. It was in such legal matters that he discoveredthat savage/barbarian kinship patterns can deviate radically from the kinship patterns taken forgranted in the so-called Western Civilization influenced by the Holy Scriptures of Abrahamic religioustraditions. He then gives a materialistic explanation, anticipating Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx.Morgan stresses the extreme importance of one technological breakthrough, the discovery of thethe smelting of metallic iron from iron oxide ores. He puts this discovery on a par with the discoveryof fire, the invention of the wheel, the domestication of animals or the domestication of cereals.Pre-Columbian Native Americans lacked metallic iron except for a small amount of meteoriciron found and used by Greenlandic Inuits. Morgan explains the vast differences betweenOld World kinship relations and New World kinship patterns by the availability, or lack thereof,of metallic iron. The implications are far-reaching, including the Decalogue, Marxism and evenfeminism.
